Agreed. Go find an empty parking lot some night and JUST DO IT. It's awesome. You can make fun of all your sissy auto friends then (I certainly do). :D

Dude, standard is the ONLY way to go!! ;)

I'll never drive an automatic, unless someone cuts/bites/removes my entire right arm!

Manuals are the only way to go, more fun, more control, pick up more chics.... you'll love it once you get the hang of it and that wont take long at all and its so worth it. go for it!

Dude, check out my "Bimmer" thread here in OT. I learned stick in 10, maybe 15 min. max after having absolutely zero prior experience with a manual. Yup, I learned in a parking lot, in a Bimmer, and with a little help from a SALESMAN. You WILL still stall the car for awhile even after learning all the basics if you are at all impatient (like I have, hehe), but I present myself as an example. After five entire days of driving, I no longer stall the car at any signals, know how to work the clutch & stick well, and could not fathom not handling a standard for more than a day. After all, simplicity is not always everything. ;)

the only problem you will have with a standard would be where you need intricate manouvers (me can't spell). by that i mean like if you are parallele parking....lettin that clutch in too fast may cause you to smash the car behind you lol.

then of course there's always the embarassment of stalling because you didn't give it enough gas lol

"mr2" is still a pretty cool car to have no matter what transmission it has. I wouldn't give up an MR2 before its time just to have a stick shift. Your friends are probably just jealous because they don't have cars half as cool as yours.

That said, it's easy after a few days. Get one in your next car.

It isn't hard, it's just stupid. Stick is a throwback to the dark ages of automobile design before anybody could figure out how to make an efficient automatic. It's like grinding flankstake instead of buying hamburger. It's like ironing a shirt instead of buying wash and ware. And just imagine everytime that hand gets close to something really interesting as it works it's way up a thigh it's time to shift. There is a powerful mythology going around that the stick is cool. Probably that's the result of boy children with no real significant achievments to their name thinking that mastering something slightly more difficult than standoing on one leg, shifting, is one of those defining transitional rites of passage that defines them as men. It's all a bunch of brainwashed cool swager and bravado that is essentially bas ackwards and absurd. Shifting shows it's true colors in the two hour traffic jam when you shift several thousand times to get a mile down the road. Now that is really coo. Shift put in the clutch break. let outhte clutch, put in the clutch break over and over again. Weeeee is this fun. And while you're developing a blister and premature heart disease, the guy in the nest car is fondeling his, his ...his coffee espresso. You'd love to give him the finger, but you'd kill the engine.

It's not too hard. Everyone I know (except for one loser at school) has learnt or is learning to drive on a stick shift. I've got autos at home, which I will definitely appreciate when I (hopefully) pass my practical exam this Sunday. I don't have any problem with manuals, but automatic is just so much simpler.

its not any harder than learning to ride a bicycle, you just have to do it
find a friend with a stick (preferably an older car ;) ) and go to the parking lot of a K-Mart that has closed down and just do it! :D

I learned last week. Took about an hour to get most of it down. Hardest part for me is the start (to get it moving, not starting the car)

I learned in less then 30 minutes, so when people tell me they drive em for fun, that just tells me it provides challenge to them.... those are the people I want off the road, if stick is a challenge (I Yawn through it even shifting left handed) it explains why so many people suck at driving. :)
