Plus, being open source, it is totally free and there are NO ROYALTIES to pay anyone when you want to use it. Most people don't realize it, but if you were a small band who wanted to distribute MP3's on the web legally you'd have to pay.

The sound quality is great, plus you can encode in variable bitrate...but I think some MP3s can be VBR now too right?

if you are in a small band.. u can still distribute your mp3's
there are free mp3 encoding software's
and after u rip it, just share it on morpheus or something.
Are Ogg files bigger then mp3's?
and besides, mp3's are plenty good quality for me
can't hear much of a difference from mp3 or CD's
dont think i'm ready to give up a 5k collection of mp3's just yet

I don't think that's technically true. AFAIK, the Fraunhofer institute owns the MP3 copyright. MP3 is actually a decoding standard only, which is why various encoders will encode differently with different results. So any time you play an mp3, you're supposed to have to pay a royalty.

I'm not totally sure about all of that, but it's pretty close I think.

Not that I'd like to contribute to the cause of "wrong forum" thread getting "high post counts", but...

What is the big deal of getting high post counts? Does it mean anything?
