Is that all there is to it?

Just built my first system. Intel p4 1.6a and Abit BD7R. I set the external clock frequency to 133MHz, left everything else the way it was and now I'm running at 2.13GHz. Is that it? Is that all it takes to become an official Overclocker? Do I get to wear one of those funny hats like you guys have? What about the secret handshake? But seriously, just change that one little setting and that's it? My temperatures have stayed the same. Everything seems fine, only faster. Do I need to run some kind of stability test? Something else I should do? Since I know pretty much nothing, any advice is welcome. Thanks...

If I remember correctly, SiSoft's Sandra can do a burn in test. It could very well be stable. I can't get a post at over 10% OC.

Congrats, I don't know the link for Sandra off hand.

dude you need to push the 1.6 to at least 2.4 ghz to get to wear the funny hat...
BTW, if you haven't already, go to overclockers.com forum--intel motherboards-Abit and download the latest bios by Mr. Natural.

Thanks for the bios tip. Looks like there is a lot of good information there. You know, when I built this system I hadn't really planned on overclocking it but now I may just have to keep going (at least till I can get the hat). Here's a question though -- should I lock the PCI?

Thats all there is to it basically - other than that some bios and memory/video card tweaks. You have to thank intel for this - its their response to AMD in their quest to regain their lost market share. Note also that the Celery tulatin also gives at least a 35 to 40% overclock with no effort. Now go over to AMD world and see the real overclockers in action and how much they spend on cooling and go nuts in the process.

Yeah, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. With just the casual glance I had given the subject it appeared quite intimidating, but with the p4 and the SoftMenu in the bios it is remarkably simple (at least the basic little overclock I've achieved.) Now if I can just remember -- is it the black smoke or the blue smoke you should worry about? Probably just need to change the oil...

Your next step is to go up 1mhz in the fsb every couple of days until something odd happens.
When you have found limit, we'll show you the correct way to wear that funny hat.
