Is taiwan a separate country from china?

oh no here we go again

although i think taiwan is pretty much chinese, it is really a seperate country

Depend whom you ask
Taiwanese: Yep, its own separate country
Chinese: Rogue province that will get taken back sooner or later.

so then should china let taiwan be independent/formally separate?

yeah right. China is big on the one nation thing. If taiwan ever formally declared itself independant(sp?) china would snatch it back with all of its military might in about 5 hours.

When the Communists took over China, the remnants of the previous govt escaped to Taiwan. So now, mainland China considers Taiwan a renegade province. The only reason it hasn't 'reclaimed' the island is because of USA's interference.

It's funny how foreign leaders are afraid to visit Taiwan because China will throw a hissy fit if that happens! (Do you know of any country's leaders who have visited Taiwan?)

Of course, I'm not a geopolitical expert, but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

They wouldn't let Hong Kong go. They waited 100's of years to grab it back from the UK. They'll bide their time with Taiwan, too. They are in no rush...

If you know anything at all about history then it is not a part of China.

If you are naive or have been spoon fed propaganda then yes, it is part of China

Hope they have improved on their swimming abilities.

OMG, I deal with this EVERYDAY AT SCHOOL

it's 78% Asian and whenever I describe someone as, "Tall, Slim, and Chinese" everyone jumps on me and says, "WHY DID YOU INSULT HIM, HE'S TAIWANESE!!!!!!"

first of all, they all look the same!!

second of all, they take too much insult into it . . .

whenever someone calls my pakistani, i correct them, in a nice way, that i'm indian . . .

Taiwan is china, it is the Republic of China

The mainland is in a state of rebellion from The Republic of China and they call themselves The Peoples Republic of China

so would it be different if people politely corrected you that that person is taiwanese?

After all, you pakistani's and indians all look the same

Hong Kong is a way different story. It was leased to Britain for 100 years, therefore it only made sense to be returned to China.

well yeah

whenever i accidentally call a taiwanese person chinese, they blow up and start chewing me out

whenever someone calls me pakistani, i say, "i'm indian, not pakistani"

i blow up when people call me iraqi or afghani . . .

EDIT: or beloved patriot . . . its different when someone says "pakistani" or "beloved patriot" . . ."beloved patriot" usually means an insult

Its my understanding that, if China had the financial and logistical means to take back Taiwan, they would've already. First, being an island makes it far more difficult to invade.

Plus, China can't afford the enormous investment it would take to invade and occupy it. Just look at how powerful the US is, and how much $$ Iraq is costing us. I'd have to think that, after 50 years of freedom, the Taiwanese would fight to the last man to defend their freedom. Plus, the Chinese know that invading Taiwan would make them an enemy of the entire free world.
