It's pretty much the standard grindfest you'll find in any MMO, but I found it lacking in the shooting department. It's not terrible, but not something worth paying monthly for.

it doesn't even compare. planetside is an FPS, TR isn't. The onyl thing FPS about it is that you have to push the mouse button to shoot.

I was in the beta a couple months ago. I found it to be a little boring and silly but I was looking for the next generation of Anarchy Online so I'm biased.

Played in the beta and currently playing Live and am sorta enjoying it. It is the usual grind fest that nearly every MMO is based on, but it doesn't feel like I'm grinding to gain levels [so far]. There are enough quests in the first zone which have kept me busy enough not to have to "repeat-kill" mobs to level cap for that zone [which seems to be around level 10] - so I'm hoping the rest of the zones too will have enough quests as well.

I really enjoy the random server generated mass attacks on various bases within the zones - the combat is frenetic and a lot of fun.

And though it is a novelty, being able to "re-paint" your armor is a big plus so you're not walking around in pink pants, purple shirt, and a green hat.

If you have an extra $50.00 laying around it's worth it to check out for a month. Or be patient and see if they'll offer a free trial period.

With that said - will I play beyond the "Free" month? Not really sure at this point. The general idea of the game is really cool, but there is still a lot that needs to be worked on or added -

- There isn't much documentation out for the game right now [or maybe there is more if you buy the boxed version] - so it's trial and learn to see what works and what doesn't [I still don't know when I can use non-standard ammo :D and I just recently learned that storage locker is shared by all of my alts - d'oh!]
- Can't add friends unless they are logged on
- GUI is static - so you have to get use to a different GUI than other MMO's.
- Crafting - difficult to obtain certain items needed to craft - the game needs an auction house.
- I'm not a fan of the combat targeting system - you can't TAB to an enemy, you'll have to put the enemy in your cross hairs and then TAB to auto-target [however the enemy seems to have no problem auto-tab-targeting you]

Is most of the game instanced? I don't want to pay $50 and $15 a month for another Guild Wars.

The game sounds like a step backward from WOW in almost every way, which is sad because WOW is 3 years old this November.

So what's the deal with the instancing? Is the game mostly instances or not? It's so damn hard to find information. People play the game, and then don't say anything except "it sucks" "it's awesome" or "it's not worth $15 a month". There are no in depth reviews whatsoever

there are SO many good games out, i am feeling a little 'picky'
-HGL is filling the bill for the moment even though the reviews are 'average', but i also don't want to pay monthly for little and hate to overlook really good games

I didn't like it at first. I was going to flame it but I held off. Now it's grown on me.
Combat is more fun than WoW etc. There is nice variety in the items. I'm only level 9. Just did my first instance, and those are about the same as WoW. The best part of the game though is the environments. The fields and forests are beautiful and have a nice feel to them. It reminds me of Asheron's call. The camps get attacked by the aliens, and you stand on the walls and shoot them, or go out in the field or whatever. This is pretty cool because usually a lot of players help defend. I'll post more info when I level some more

The game is really demanding btw. My RAM usage was 93% the last time I checked, and I have 2gb. With just firefox running i'm at 513mb used. I have a 7950gx2 and at 1920x1200 I get 15fps if I turn "deferred lighting on". With no lighting I get 30-40fps in open areas. The next patch is supposed to fix the lighting problem. Even with lighting off, I don't understand why it doesn't perform better. The graphics don't look much more advanced than WoW, but the framerate is half.

You only think the combat is more fun than WoW because you are level 9. Wait until you are level 30 and the game goes stale.

I got to around lvl 15 in Beta, and share those exact thoughts.
