Is SVC Golden Gate (aka OCZ Gladiator) with 27 CFM fan good enough?

Found a good deal on the SVC Golden Gate here and I'm interested in getting it cuz it sounds like a good HSF (from what I've heard about the Gladiator)...

First of all, a couple reasons why I'm getting it (ranked by importance?):

1) It's small...I have a Golden Orb on a slotket right now and it doesn't block any DIMM slots...I need to have at least 2 free and most of the other HSFs seem to block 2/3 leaving me with only 1...

2) It has performs well...right? =)

And I'd put a third reason in there if I could say that it was quiet...so I wanted to get it with a 27 CFM fan instead of the Delta 38 CFM fan which is super noisy (or so I've read).

Will the heatsink perform as well with the weaker fan? Is it a good trade off? 27CFM@38dB vs. 37CFM@46dB?

If I shouldn't go with the 27 CFM fan, is there another HSF that meets my criteria? Small, powerful, and quiet?

It probably wont perform as well. Since the fins are so closely packed together, it needs a pretty strong fan to blow across it. I read this somewhere.

I think I might have found 2 other HSFs that I'm interested in...one is the Coolermaster DP5-6H11 and the other is the Thermosonic Thermoengine V60-4210...both are small...but one is cheap while the other is...well...expensive. =)

I've read that the Thermoengine performs really well but it seems to be a little on the expensive side. How does the Coolermaster perform? Both HSFs seem quiet...quieter than the Gladiator with the 27 CFM fan on but I wanna know how to perform.

Btw, this HSF is for a PIII-650@866...I currently have a Golden Orb on it and it's max temps are way too high (~55C)...I can't even get it rock stable. =( I thought I got it stable once but then I applied Arctic Silver on it and it got worse? For those interested, you can read/contribute to my story here.

i'm very happy to report that the Golden gate w/ a 27cfm fan allows me to OC my 1.0 ghz 266 to 1.33 ghz running an fsb of 133. i think this chip would go a lot higher if i had better ram, but i'm running the cheap stuff right now and i'm satisfied w/ results so far.

so, chew on this, in answer to ur question. i think this hsf is good enough for almost anything ur willing to throw at it. are you planning on Oc'ing? i don't think u had that in ur original post.

anyway. here it is.

Yup, OCing a PIII-650 to 866...wish I could go higher. =)

Long complicated story involving the stupid "in-order depth queue" setting in BIOS. There are two settings, 1 and 8, and at 1, CPU is a lot more stable but memory benchmarks are half of what they are when set at 8. Temps are also a lot lower. I'm currently running at 866 @ 1.75v with a Golden Orb and my max temps are somewhere around 44C but that's with the setting at 1. At 8, I can't get my system stable at all up to 1.90v even...after a little heating up, temps max around 55C before it freezes.

Now I'm thinking that it might be another system component that's keeping me down? Maybe my RAM? I have a Crucial PC133 CAS2 128 MB chip and a PNY PC133 CAS3 128 MB chip but my system is set at 3-3-3...I think I should replace my PNY one. =(

Heh, now that I think about it, it is very likely that is the problem...because when I benchmarked my system with SiSoft Sandra, the CPU and CPU Multimedia benchmark results were the same for each setting (1 and 8) but the memory benchmarks had a big difference....so with the setting at 8, there must be more stress on my memory and I guess the PNY chip can't handle it...I'm gonna try taking it out and see if I can get it stable with the setting at 8...

Thanks for the help guys! I'm definitely gonna order the Golden Gate soon...just gotta choose which fan to go with...still can't decide between performance or noise...

Update: Something unexplainable has just happened! =) I had my PNY chip in the first slot and the Crucial chip in the second so I took out the PNY and changed the setting to 8 and I ran my tests and it passed! Then I put back the PNY chip but into the third slot and ran my tests and it passed!

Hmm...maybe I shouldn't have had it in the first slot in the first place cuz that was probably too close to the Golden Orb? Or maybe my first slot is defective? I even changed my RAM settings to 2-2-3 (had to have that 3 in there or else PNY wouldn't let me boot) and all is well! Same ambient temps as other days' tests...oh wells, the max temps are still too high (averaged around 55C) so I'm still gonna get the Gladiator (Golden Gate) and I guess with the 27 CFM fan since PlatinumGold has given his seal of approval. =) If I need better performance, I can always just get the Delta fan and switch with the 27 CFM one.
