Is sushi healthy? Well it depends. It is all about what kind of sushi you are getting.

Rice: One sushi roll is about a whole cup of rice, that is a lot of starch! However rice can be a good source of carbs. The only problem might be the seasoning which is usually sugar and vinegar. An alternative to rice is having your sushi wrapped in cucumber.

Nori: Nori is the seaweed used to wrap up the sushi. This is actually quite healthy. Nori contains vitamin A,B, and C, as well as niacin. There are also benefits to the digestive system.

Fish: Raw fish, when it is fresh and sushi grade, can actually be very beneficial. Fish contains a good amount of protein. However you don't want to eat too much of it as it has mercury.

Things to avoid:

Tempura: It is fried in oil just like french fries.

sushi sauce: some sauces contain a lot of mayo.

It is best to stick to the basic rolls if you are trying to watch your calories.

Good sushi rolls:
salmon roll: ~130 calories/ 4g fat/ 17g carbs/ 7g protein
Kappa maki: ~136 calories/ 0g fat/ 30g carbs/ 6g protein
tuna roll: ~180 calories/ 2g fat/ 27g carbs/ 24g protein

Hope this helps answer your question if sushi is healthy.

I like the conveyor belt places...

My wife and I went to Hawaii on our honeymoon and ate sushi at an authentic place....then found the conveyor belt. They had a colored plate system to determine price. Yellow plates, blue plates, green plates, and red plates all had a different cost...then when you paid, they just counted how many of each you had that were empty. The food was alright, but it was a cool experience.

Sushi is good for you, but a lot of Americanized sushi rolls aren't as good for you as just Sashimi or Nigiri. A lot of rolls (and some of the tastiest) are fried and drizzled with sauces that are high in sodium or fat....just use common sense and try not to overeat.

PORTIONS are more important than what you eat when it comes to "healthy and diet".

I find that people often forget that.

Eat whatever you want, but include plenty of fruits and veggies, and WATCH YOUR PORTIONS.

This. One rule I have about sushi is to not eat any roll that has cream cheese in it. D:

Found a local place nearby that has dine-in happy hour every day of the week.

We make it out there are 1-2 times a week. Fantastic stuff.
