I too refrained from using it until I had to to Play Red Orchestra 2: Rising Storm. I never use it for anything else so in my case I don't notice anything.. specially on this 6 core, 12 thread, Xeon @ 4Ghz
 
I haven't been able to launch HL:Source for at least a month:

Apparently it's related to the Linux crap they've got going on right now, and you have to opt into a beta to fix it, but this breaks other parts of the game.

It's extremely poor service for a paying Windows customer to be subjected to problems related to beta testing on Linux.

Weird. It works fine for me,(no beta participation) but I'm going to guess you didn't make that post to attempt to troubleshoot, and more to relate your experience. That said, Valve can't realistically plan for every hardware configuration and dinging the software for a problem that is not common seems kind of backwards. On the other side of the coin, I guess I shouldn't use my experience of nearly flawless gaming to judge those that have had problems.
