is stargate sg-1 worth getting into?

I liked Firefly, First season of Jericho, DS9, Battlestar Gallatica, and Odyssey 5.

IMO Stargate SG-1 is hit or miss.. usually miss but some episodes are ok. I kinda like Stargate Atlantis more because like enjoy Rodney's antics.

I recently watched up through Season 8 (starting on Hulu and the "moving on") and only got that far because I wanted to finish what I started. So many filler/junk episodes, questionable motivations, and convoluted "we don't care about that shit" storylines. I was secretly a little glad when my HD died and took the last couple seasons with it.

Mini spoilers and comments thru 4.5 seasons -

The black hole episodes are dumb....maybe I didn't watch the season 4 finale close enough, but how exactly did they launch the star gate from the mothership after the wormhole was initialized?

I hate the Iris. How do the Tok'ra and anyone else know when the SGC receives the code and takes down the Iris? They always come thru the wormhole within 3 seconds of the iris being removed. I would like to see at least one accident with this.

Did I miss how wormholes are supposedly one way, but they can receive video, radio and communication at SGC?.

--- SPOILERS! ---

There was at least one episode where another planet sends several explorers to Earth through the Stargate while the iris is closed. .... thump! 🙁

Black holes affect the stargate but the time dilation and gravitation effects depend on the distance and other factors only Carter would understand.

Wormholes are 2-way. Once the wormhole is open you can step back and forth through either gate.

Yeah, the explorers didn't know about the Iris....I want a mishap for someone that knows about it! BTW, that was a good episode (the one with the rogue group genetically engineering a pure race). Unfortunately, it also demonstrates a very common theme were something is not as it seems originally (which takes most of the suspense out of it since that seems to happen every other episode)

That's why they need their own mounts, ROVs and UAVs!

75% is poor, with poor writing and incredibly corny/ridiculous episodes.

If you want good sci fi- watch... Firefly

does. not. computer.

anyways, I started watching it today and dug it. first couple episodes sucked, but it seemed to pick up around episode 6 (currently half-way through S1). it's not BSG or anything, but it's an enjoyable watch (well, listen at this point... I've got my headphones in and my netbook off to the side of the desk while at work)

Ok so Ive made it through the first 7 episodes and aside from the first few which I didn't really care for, the series is really starting to pick up. This last episode (The Nox) has been the best so far so hopefully it only gets better.

Heh, Rodney was my least favorite character until I finally got used to him..he annoyed me.

Just made it through season 8. I thought seasons 7 and 8 were better than any of the previous seasons.

BTW, what was with the same ending to the last couple of episodes of season 8 (the fact that the time travel episode ended the same way as the final battle episode where SG-1 was fishing at O'Neill's cabin)? Obviously this was probably due to one episode planning on being the finale, then they changed their minds and ended it with another episode. But does anyone know the backstory on this?

You're talking about the Moebius episodes right?

They're not both exactly the same. In the second one, there are fish in O'Neill's pond.

The first few episodes are weak, my least favorite being "the planet of male chauvinist pigs what get schooled by Carter." Grit your teeth and keep going, it gets better for years and years after that one.

Maybe that's why I never watched this show. Its been so long now...but I remember really liking the concept of Stargate so I DID start watching this show when it first came out. I don't really remember the exact reason, but I decided the show was shit pretty quickly and never watched it again. And then I never knew WTF was going on when I caught part of an odd episode later.

If only I was unemployed and there was a marathon on maybe I would give it a second chance. 😛 So many scifi shows struggle with the inability to bring in new viewers after takeoff.

For anyone that likes Sci-Fi it's definately worth a look. I thought it was great. I even got my wife to watch it. It took a few years to get over the "I don't want to watch that crap" impression (she always seemed to be around during the bad episodes). After she got hooked (season 6?) we would watch all the episodes of SG1 and Atlantis together

If you want good sci fi- watch
TNG 3-7
DS9 2-7
4400 1-2(3-4 are just ok)
Farscape end of season 1-4
BSG all
Quantum leap if you want light sci fi
Firefly

Farscape was pretty awesome from seasons 1-3 but once scorpius was on the ship that show went straight into the toilet bowl. I watched that season of a sense of loyalty and completism, not because it was enjoyable. The mini-series was mixed bag but I'm glad it was made because boy would the end of season 4 been a shit way to end the series.

It does indeed keep getting better. Season 1 had a bunch of terrible throw away episodes. Those happened a lot less as time progressed up through season 7. It was after RDA entered quasi retirement that the show got mediocre again.

One thing I hate is people calling stuff 'Sci-Fi when it isn't. With the exception of TNG, or the first couple seasons of BSG, most of the stuff being talked about here isn't really Sci-Fi in the true sense of the word. It quickly degenerates into actors in costumes talking about mythical weapons and contrived politics.

It really depends on if you liked the characters and writing, and SG1 (IMHO), was pretty good at both. It's too bad they invented one of the best group of bad guys ever (the Ori) but failed to do anything with them. One thing that worked so well with TNG and some of the Voyager episodes were that the Borg were such good bad guys.

IMHO, I liked how 'Lexx' dealt with the replicator issues over SG-1.
