No. I like Star Wars a lot, but it's not even my favorite film in the saga (I'm all about The Empire Strikes Back). And I think The Godfather and Casablanca are both better films than anything in the Star Wars series.

It was the most influential movie ever made as far as its influence on American culture:

-it redefined what a blockbuster movie was after Jaws

-the special effects group Lucas put together for the series eventually became Pixar

-many popular directors like Nolan or J. J. Abrams claim it to be their primary influence

-it created the concept of "used space" which is now the expectation for a Sci Fi series or film

-it gave Ronald Reagan a splashy name for his program that bankrupted the USSR

-it even help define modern music. Producer Giorgio Moroder saw Star Wars in the theater and was disappointed that the music in the cantina wasn't futuristic enough. So he set out that summer to create a futuristic sound and the end result was Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" which is often seen as the first techo song

Eagerly awaiting the first contrarian-for-the-sake-of-being-a-contrarian calling Star Wars overhyped garbage and saying something like Catwoman was 100x better. It can't be the an internet discussion without at least one.

Nah.

Was fantastic for what was basically a B movie when it came out and what it did.

Best is a long way off.

If your only criterion for judging a movie is how quickly it can cure insomnia, then sure.

I am not saying it is the most fun movie ever, but it is the only really highly critically acclaimed movie that is still relevant.

Most lists have it or Citizen Kane, and Kane lacks the mind blowing predictions 2001 has like talking AIs, space tourism, flatscreens, Skype, or iPads that keep it from being dated.

Catwoman? Surely you jest, that was terrible.

Elektra, however, is miles above Star Wars. Miles.

Raider of the Lost Ark is the best movie of all time.

Everyone knows this.

Star Wars is also up there. of course.

It's really hard to pick a best movie ever. Most Hollywood movies are just formula pictures. I mostly watch independent and foreign films now.

Aliens was better than Star Wars, imo, and I loved Star Wars. Then The Matrix appeared and beat them both. Then LoTR came along and smoked them all.

Waiting for TNBT.

It's is a really good saga for sure. Best movie ever? That's a tough one... Raiders of the Lost Ark was pretty damn good, as was Jurassic Park back in their day.

I'll still take Jaws over Star Wars, but not by a whole lot.

If it comes down to what I would rather watch today, I would take any number of the Trek movies but I suppose that's an argument for another day 🙂
