Is SP1 necessary?

While it is not absolutely necessary, SP1 fixes security issues, memory leaks, and generally increases overall stability. Get it.

On several installs, prior to running SP1, I had a hell of a time getting a couple NICs to work, specifically 3COM 3C905C series. I found if I first installed SP1 all my hardware was detected and installed a lot easier. No drawbacks and many benefits. Go for it.

I downloaded sp1 (expresss installation) and after rebooting it gets as far as the windows 2k logon (or shortly after but before the desktop is displayed) then dies with the infamous blue screen. The top one-third displays hexadecimal suggesting some error somewhere (not layman enough for me). Each reboot gives the same error screen. I have hit F8 when win 2k starts to load and chosen both methods of recovering Windows but no luck the result is the same.
I then had to fall back to a Ghost image that I had taken a couple of days prior. Ghost complained that the partition I was intending to overwrite had an error (some bit not being set) but I chose to continue anyway. Fortunately, all went OK and I can now use Windows again.
I can't think what went wrong and am wary of trying again.
