That's the word on the streets.

They haven't confirmed anything but have said that "nobody will be shocked at the price" or something along those lines. IMHO, that means expect something in the $300-$350 range

It never worked for Sega.

Good point. Still, unlike Sega, MS has bottomless pots of cash to spend on promotion and exclusive developer licensing. I guess we'll see . . .
MS is in a much stronger position than Sega was with the Dreamcast. Between the developer support, comparable hardware to Sony, deep pockets, etc. I think DonVito is right andf time to market will be big this generation.

As long as the Japanese market is sucking Sony's poop deck, Sony will always have a measure of safety with whatever crazy ideas they come up with, regardless of the price.
Microsoft is still going to have to work hard to outsell Sony outside NA.

The one thing that really jumped at me in the article was the claim that Sony was shooting for a 10 year life cycle of the PS3. Consoles haven't had a 10 year life cycle for decades.

Do they really think it's going to be that powerful? Or are they hoping technology slows down. If they intend for it to last 10 years, it better have some serious grunt behind it, because you can bet Microsoft will have another console out in 5 years.

frankly, i think the only reason why Xbox360 might fail was backwards compatiblity with Xbox games and i read today that all bestselling games and a handful of others will be make compatible so thats a non-issue... therefore, the Xbox 360 with its early launch, massive marketing and cool online features out of the box will be a major hit and will be on every kids xmas lists...

this time i think MS will own Sony and Nintendo...

so ps3 and the 360 will both be compatible with previous versions? that's a big deal to previous psx and ps2 owners because there are already some classics. as to xbox, it has what? halo?

What you guys aren't seeing is the critical spoiled-5-year-old-kid-at-christmas market. BOTH will sell like tardcakes - X360 at Christmas 2005, PS3 at Christmas 2006.

I used to be a PS2 fanboy, but after getting xbox live i haven't even played my ps2. however i have played God of War at a friends house, and I will admit, that is one of the best platformers I have ever played.

If you left PS2 because of Xbox Live then you bought the PS2 for the wrong reasons. The PS2 is not about online content at all. Infact, if you were looking for online content, PC games own the freaking hell out of Xbox Live in every way, shape and form. I'm playing BF2, CSS, WoW, EQ2, Auto Assault Beta, and Enemy Territory Fortress (ETF). Xbox Live simply cannot compete with that. Even when I get bored of those games, I can aim towards the little things like Tetrinet, Gunbound, mIRC Tanks, etc.

I had ps2 on release date, so i think i know why i bought PS2. i bought it for tekken, gran turismo 3, mgs games, etc. its just that nothing new or mind boggling has been on ps2 for a long time, w/the exception of god of war. all these other new games are straight up rehashes ... mgs, gt4, dmc3, etc. the games that are on both consoles are always better on xbox.

And yes, i've been online pc gaming since warcraft days. so i think i know about that as well. for some reason, its much simpler to turn on my 50" dlp, my 5.1 sound, sit on the couch, and get in a halo 2 game in 5 seconds, let alone with 3 other friends sitting in the room with me, than getting on a PC behind a 19" monitor, after installing a game and a patch, then setting up the network configuration, my keyboard/mouse to the layout I want, then finally finding a server to play on.

if you SERIOUSLY think PC gaming is as user friendly as xbox live is, not to mention that most "casual" gamers don't even know how to get a PC game running easily and to its potential, then you really are smoaking teh crack pipe. xbox live is like 100x more user friendly than PC when it comes to online gaming.

there is just something about putting a disc in an xbox and being in a game in 5 minutes while sitting on the couch w/friends, and most consumers think so too considering xbox live just hit the 2 million subscription mark.

So you brag about having PS2 on launch date and brag about playing pc games since Warcraft 1, yet your main reason for using Xbox is ease of use? Funny. Tell you what, you keep playing Halo2 and telling yourself you are getting the best experience out of online play. Anyone who has half a clue about online play knows where the best FPS experiences are and they arn't on Xbox2 and DEFFINITELY arn't involving Halo.

If there was any decent ones out as of late....christ the PC Game section is down to a rack at EB world and the like. Pretty sorry spending $500 on a top end video card that might have a game fully utilitize in a year or two :(

I like to have fun on my couch while my g/f watches her stupid shows on the splitscreen instead of sitting at my computer when im at home which is what I do all day at work and the last thing I wanna do when I get home.

I'm an ex-PC gamer and I don't like Halo much. Having played the gamut of FPSes from Wolf 3d to Doom and it's clones, all of the Quakes and Unreals, I just can't seem to enjoy FPSes on consoles.

That said, I love my Xbox for what it is. A console with some fun games that I can always count on to work without new drivers and patches, and multiplayer games that can be played easily with friends in the same room for an evening of great fun.

oh yea, i forgot that i said the ONLY games I play on xbox live are FPS, my bad ...

you are a moron who is one sighted. you obviously are a PC fanboy who doesn't even give consoles a chance. atleast me, i play everything. i just haven't had fun on a PC game online since CS. and since my friends (as in REAL LIFE FRIENDS, doesn't sound like you know that concept) don't all have high end PC's or even PC's at all, yet alone internet connections, we can sit down on my couch on my big ass TV and play some xbox games online. sorry if probably 5% of my friends even know what a PC Driver is. i am not your typical napolean dynamite wanna be like you probably are.

We like to sit down and play a game in a few minutes rather than configuring the whole game for 15 minutes to get the settings right for our video card, since you know, EVERY PC varies, whereas all XBox are the same so they are simple to bootup a game. This varies from football games, to fighting games, to racing games, to *gasp* FPS games!

It doesn't take a fvcking genius to realize that mouse/kb is better (translated, easier) to control than a controller, that is a given. atleast people who like consoles can give it a try, rather than being liike "OMGWTFBBQ 2 HARD 4 ME I QUIT!!1!" like yourself.

Good luck getting your friends to play Burnout 3, MK:D or SF2, or NFL 2K5 on your PC online, all sitting behind your measly 19" monitor while squinting. i have tried to play racing games on PC, i have tried to play Madden on PC, and i don't even tihnk the make fighting games on PC. But the racing and sports games on PC are crap and typically take more time to actually setup than they do to play, yet alone you have to buy some crappy gamepad/joystick which i have yet to find one i like.

I've lost intrest in purchasing any new sony products after dealing with Disc Read Errors with no help from Sony. I was stupid enough to pay $300 for a PS2 only a few days after it came out and while I've gotten some good usage out of it, for that price, I shouldn't have to take it apart and fix it myself on multiple occasions.

I'm probably going to be buying an XBox next week, but I don't think that will make me rush out and buy an XBox 360 anytime in the next few years.

When the Revolution becomes a little bit more than speculation and renders, then I'll start thinking about that, as I've always loved Nintendo consoles.

PS: Anyone who uses *gasp* in a post is a douche bag.

Actually, I disagree. MS has been spending tons getting XBox hyped. I think it will outsell PS3.

I thought I was hardcore PC gamer and I used to scoff at consoles until I got myself an xbox. It's just so much easier to game with friends, everyone just plops on the couch and we pick up controls and just go, whereas pc gaming involved have friends with powerful comps and getting on the right server.

Regarding Xbox360 vs. PS3, so far the games for xbox360 appeals to me as well as the MC functions. The xbox live silver is also a plus for me.

MS will apparently have an 8-month jump on Sony, so Sony will really have to bring something special to catch up.

Since when is getting consoles to market first a big deal? The PS2 was not the first console to market in this current generation, the Dreamcast was. In face the PS wasn't the first console to the market in the previous generation, the Saturn was. The Xbox is still the last major console release that we have seen and is doing quite well. I think the way a console succeeds is a combination of marketing (probably most important) and 3-4 really huge releases over the console's lifetime.

Dreamcast = piracy hurt it BIG time. you could play copied games w/out even chipping your system.
Saturn = $400 price tag (this was what, 10 years ago?) hurt that system greatly.

MS getting the console out before PS3 is GREATLY going to help them w/the market share IMO. However, how the 360 prevails in Japan is still what is worrying me in the overall "success" of the 360. Sony just dominates over there, and as much as they are into electronics and technology over there, i don't think the high price tag will ruin the japanes market at all.

hell, when the Japanes PS2 came out, my friend bought 10 of them for $500 each. He flipped them and sold them on release day for $1500 a piece, no problem. He made $10,000 in a week off of that. so I don't think a $500 price tag will hurt the japanes market.

You think the average gamer is a pirate? Please.

As for the Saturn's $400 price tag, it dropped to $300 to match the PS shortly after the PS was released. I don't think you can blame either of those things for why the Sega systems bit the dust.

I think with a year's jump the Xbox360 will have a chance to establish a pretty good market, but I don't think that will stop the PS3 and the Revolution from selling well either. Its probably the early adopters of the 360 that are most likely to buy a 2nd or third console as well.

QFT. I hate people thinking they're NBA Live gods playing on their PS2s and then they lose to me on PC with like a 60 pt deficit.

what a moronic statement......of course they'd lose to you on PC.......but I'd bet they'd own you just as bad on ps2.

Boy... I really shouldn't even reply to this. Let's see, you spent your first post bragging about how you're an early subscriber to every system and you spend this post basically making fun of me? Awesome post man, real awesome, you come off as a complete winner in this argument. And really, the only new argument you brought to the table is so that you could sit around and play games with your friends in front of your tv, something the Gamecube does better than any console out there. Ah... well.

Oh and Bobberfett, I never said I have anything wrong with consoles. I just laughed at the notion of ditching the PS2 because Xbox has Xbox Live, something that has been around and 10 times better on the PC... since forever. That was my only point, which has somehow been lost, no biggy though, I expect points to get lost around here, especially with posts like Purebeasts. :)

Gotcha.

My friend has a PS2, and I've just never been impressed by it. Most of the games I'm interested in playing are on Xbox, plus it has Live. I've heard God of War was amazing, but there just aren't that many AAA titles that are PS2 exclusives.
