Is Socket 939 really that future proof?

Let me start by saying this. I just upgraded from my primitive Socket A to a very stable and refined Socket 754 rig. I dont really see the need to goto Socket 939 now or in the future. Who is to say that in the next 2-3 years that AMD comes out and says that they are changing their socket again? Then what happens? Now the 939 becomes low end and there goes all the upgrade options. Heck 939 doesn't even have PCI-E yet.

What I am trying to say is that bottom line, if you need a top the line system now there is no better alternative than a 754 system. Then in 2-3 years when you are ready to upgrade again I bet you will have choices.

Thats just my 2 cents about the future of upgrading. Just get a good socket 754 with an lowend AMD64 procesor and be happy for now and then when the prices drop on the 3700+ upgrade to it. It will last you atleast 2+ years coupled with a 6800GT.

Coments please

Who told you that? I think on one of the AT articles they say AMD will move to a socket C for DDR II support.

I stopped buying MBs for their upgradeability. By the time I upgrade there are new chipsets, features, and chips I want to use. So I just build a system and guild a new one from scratch 18 months later.

No CPU platform is "future proof". It's just that of all the available CPU platforms, 939 represents the best hope for upgradability. Socket A, 754, 478, and even current 775 (due to their lack of 1066 FSB) are all either dead or have had their deaths predicted by internal roadmaps. Socket 939 is the only platform who's future terminal date is still up in the air.

I would agree that there is no such thing as future-proof.

I laugh when anyone tells me they want a computer that will last them 4 years.

All you can do is buy the best for your money atm.

IMO, that would be socket 754.

However, ask me in 6 months, & i may say 939 is the best to go with.

Things always change; you cannot base purchases only for the future.

everything is written in stone.....all cpu roadmaps are. :)

price premium of 939 is way too high for the "general" enthusiast.

Not all of us upgrade every 3 er so yrs. Some of us upgrade every year, or even sooner. Personally, i am more like u and upgrade every few yrs or so. (800mhz, 1.6 ghz, 3.3 ghz... i seem to double)
