I had my eyes on two auctions. The seller was auctioning Toshiba SCSI sd-m1401 Dvd-rom, mine is acting up. The two auction were 2 hour apart.. The price looks good. The first one I bidded in the last 10 second of the auction, but lost by $1.arghhhhh.

Ok, I still have another chance on the second one I thought. Same think happened! The freaking annoying part is, its the same user who out bidded me by $1 dollar!#$^%^

He is definately using a snipe program. Is that legal?

It's not illegal.
And you will always lose by $1 or whatever the bid increment is.

You should have bid higher.

Fact is he paid $1 more than you said you were willing to pay.

If you were willing to pay more, it's your own damn fault you didn't say so.

snipe programs aren't illegal to my knowledge...at least i hope their not cause i use em whenever i bid nowadays :p and im happy to have them around as a seller to...nothing like running up that final price right before the auction end...
I say if u cant beat em join em...its not the best way to win auctions but its a proven way to do so :)

umm, maybe his bid was higher than yours?

I was leading inside 5 second on both auction. What are the chance??

Quite high.
He could have easily set his maximum bid to well over what he thought yours was.

Sniping is risky for both parties.

If your bid would have been higher(than his bid), he would have tried to snipe with ~5 seconds left, and you would've won because there wouldn't have been enough time for him to rebid.

sniping is retarded though.
i disagree with it.. i mean, some people just aren't that up to snuff on things, (such as auction sniper) and to lose something like that, would really frustrate most people.

I got peeved the first time I got hit by a sniper. Then I realized that the sniper paid more than I was willing to pay, and then moved on.

I dont understand why they wont just extend the auction by another minute each time there a bid within the last minute.

He's watching the action. I won an auction on a bike frame by placing a bid the last 2 seconds, manually, no sniping.

???

That's how auctions work dude. If you don't want to get outbid, bid more!

I always snipe by hand anyway.

If you actually trust the proxy bidding system to do it's job, it doens't matter!
If the absolute most you are willing to pay on an item is $100, than anyone who pays $101 is paying too much. You can't say "Well I would have bid $2 more..." because where do you draw the line?

Draw the line once and stick to it and then the only way you lose is by some idiot who is willing to pay too much.

It's helpful to not think of ebay as "winning" and "losing," too. You aren't winning anything, you are naming a price. If someone names a higher price, they paid too much.

Personally, I use a sniping program. Not because I think it will help me win, but because it eliminates the temptation of watching the auction to see if I should raise my bid. I just "set it and forget it."

eBay sniping is fictional. The only reason it happens is because you bid less than you realistically would pay for something.
