To reclarify - this wasn't me (NewSc2).

I left my logon on my friend's computer and she asked this question thinking she was logged into her own account. Let the discussion commence anyways~

I read somewhere that there is no conclusive scientific link that suggest smoking directly causes cancer. What do you guys think?

so its just a coincidence that all these smokers die of lung cancer/heart disease?

Cigarettes are bad. They are the only product on the market, that if used as intended, will kill you.

Alcohol?

as a pharmacology student, i can tell you that the tobacco smoke contains various carcinogens that may cause cancer.

basically cancer is caused by the uncontrolled proliferation of mutated cells.

it is proven that smoking does increases the risk of getting lung cancer. that is pure statistics over all these years...

so it is up to you if you believe it. cigraettes are so expensive anyway

Nah, it just makes your clothes, mouth, car, homes and breath reek. That is all.

Unless you're smart about it. But apparently all smokers are stupid, right?

Alcohol?

Alcohol companies have it plastered all over to drink responsibly. They dont want you to drink a case of beer, or a fifth of gin a day. A glass or two of wine or a couple beers a day have been shown to improve your health.

Indeed, cigarettes come with warning labels as well. That doesn't stop alcoholics, does it?

Cigarette companies plaster similar warnings all over their products, too. It's not like the alcohol companies are looking out for you, they are just trying to avoid lawsuits.

Can you prove that it is bad without making a referance to what the media has already stated?

I think they proved it does cause cancer BUT they couldn't prove that second hand smoking does the same.

My grandmother died of lung cancer. She smoked a couple packs a day. My aunt has emphazima-sp?, and she smokes mulitple packs a day. I have chronic bronchytis-sp? again, and I smoke (yeah, I fell off the wagon.)

I dont know any people who have had those illnesses that didnt smoke.

You inhale that much smoke per day and you blame the cigarettes? A person who stands behind a running automobile to get high will get lung cancer as well.

It's stupidity, not the medium of transmission of smoke.

I'm sure there are, just not as many alcoholics. How many people are killed by drunk driving each year?

less than die from smoking.
If you want I can link, but I know its true.

as a former smoker-7yrs smoke-free *knock wood* I can tell you, it is one nasty A$$ habit to get yourself into. I cannot stand going to some friends house who smoke. I come back home, and that damn smell is in my hair, clothes, it's just nasty. Smoking doesn't kill everyone though. Some people can smoke for a relatively short period of time and have bad health problems, some can smoke a lifetime and die from old age. That's why it's a RISK Are you feeling lucky today? well are ya punk? 😉
