Is smoking cigarettes harmful if you have a cold?

Someone told me that if you start to get a cold and you smoke a cigarette it can increase your sickness. I can see how this could be true because of the smoke in the lungs and everything. Can someone confirm this?

i assume that if you already have an irritated throat/lungs the smoke doesnt help.. cigarette smoke is harmful from the beginning cold or no cold.

Ok ok, I see what you guys are saying but I did not say anywhere that they were healthy to begin with. I didn't mean to make it sound like they were. Sorry!

Why don't you just quit moron. If you are worried about what smoking will do to you when you are sick then worry about what it will do to you when you are not.

they are always harmfull. Cold or no cold.

That being said .. I do smoke but I try to keep it down to only a few smokes a day ...

I smoke and I hate it when I have a cold, it makes it hard to enjoy my cigarrette! aaaargh 🙂

Whether it's more harmful when you have a cold I dunno, but it likely makes the congestion worse by making the phlegm thicker. Make sure to take some Vitamin C(orange, Cranberry juice, or chewable(yum)), that'll help get rid of a cold.

Heck ya... when i was sick with a serious cough, smoking just hurt the lungs even more... so that can't be good.

Menthol's are okay...I had a girlfriend who believed this.

What are you crazy! Cigarettes are harmful period. Don't matter if you have chicken pox a cold, flu or a sunburn.

I got a real nasty cold 3 years ago and I couldn't smoke. After the cold went I decided that I just wouldn't smoke anymore. 18 year habit stopped.

the cold actually blocks the regular harmfulness of the cigarette and turns it into good things

Smoking cigarettes is harmful only under the following conditions:

*ALL OF THEM*

I hope this helps! 🙂

Yes, it doesn't help your immune system to fight the cold when you have chemicals of a cig in your body.

Actually smoking cigarettes when you get a cold won't hurt your immune system. It is already messed up from all the smoking you did before then.

Simply stopping smoking when you feel a cold coming on will do nothing to lessen the symptoms. The damage is already done.
