is Seti pointless?

according to scientific facts, the nearest stars to us are only a few lightyears away.

A lightyear is how far light year travels in one year.

So naturally, for most of the closest stars we've pretty much determined that there is no life on them.

Seti, if I understand it, is searching the stars for intelligent life.

So we are searching for stars that are several thousand lightyears away from us.

nothing travels faster than light. (that we know of)

Seti is searching light, radio, and electromagentic radition from space.

If light is the fastest of everything Seti is searching for, every signal read today is at least a couple of thousand of years old.

So in effect Seti is searching for planets and life that is quite literally several thousand years behind whenever it is heard, Right? Yes.

So what are they listening for?

If you accept the Christian Creation view of the universe, backed by Scientific facts and fossil records, any other intelligent life out there is that many thousand of years behind us. And if we picked up anything from them, it would be the same signals that we were emitting several thousand years ago... which was none.

If you accept the Big Bang theory that is a proven bunch of crock, or you accept the "creation evolution" theory that is again, a proven bunch of crock on fossil records alone, and thus think the universe is several billion years old you run into another problem. If another intelligent life evolved at the same rate we did, or a little bit faster rate, then they are at the same point we are in technology, or just a bit in front of us. But the signals we would be recieving coming from where-ever they are would be several thousand years old. Again, like us, they weren't transmitting anything back then.

If you accept such a faster rate that they already have "faster than light" travel, why are we looking for them? They, if they existed, would be able to find us much quicker. Also, we don't have anything that can pick up faster than light travel. So if some other life came close enough, stopped, let out some signals, and we did pick up a signal, other than knowing someone else is out there, how would you make contact. You wouldn't, your great-grandkids would. Which is rather pointless.

So is Seti and all other such projects a waste of time and energy and finances? Yes.

Until the barrier that is the speed of light is broken, Seti and all other projects like it are effectively searching the distant past for eletronic noises or signals that simply cannot have reached us yet, and won't reach us for thousands of years to come.

When/if the barrier is broken and we can get past those years of travel, then projects like Seti become worthwhile.

But I like wasting my time

You have no proof whatsoever that another culture did not have the technology/development to be able to transmit some form of signal in time for us to recieve it now.

If you must present your arguments as questions, then let us answer them! ;)

hmm... see the main thing is thoe lots of us really don't care if there life or not... most of what we know of life is that it's Fck up any ways... i just like building computers and racing with ppl... and I'm sure others -- lots of others do it for the same "whys"!

Maybe you should send your brilliant discovery (

) to the stupid scientists ( :p ) at Berkeley so they can shut down the SETI program and we can all stop wasting our time.

One thing I am certain of is posts like this are pointless.

Is a "Saist" some sort of Troll? Sure seems like it. Put on your flame suit because you've got it coming...

I guess they forgot to tell you in your Big Book of Evil Science Facts that light and radio are both forms of electromagnetic radiation, and given the same medium, travel at the same speed.

But then again, since I have a Ph.D. in a proven bunch of crock, what could I possibly know?

Edit: Hey!! I'm one of those stupid scientists at Berkeley! ;)

Great now m2kewl has started something that will keep this thread alive for days. I mean geez now everyone is going to post something silly and claim a nef all in the name of post count. I guess that is all this thread really is worth though is for neffing huh?

Let it drop guys, it seems like all he's trying to do is flame.

Lets not give him the pleasure, and don't bother neffing

Neffing a troll to death, how unique ;)

Saist, if this isn't just a troll, check out talk.origins, then repost your question here if you think you're up to it.

On your question, aside from the sophistry, if you don't ask the question you'll never know the answer.

I love when Creationists try to claim "Scientific facts and fossil records" back up the view that the universe is only a few thousand years old (I think the last crackpot I talked to said around 6,000 years?).

Dude, look. The Bible is written as parables. Stories that are meant to teach a lesson, not necessarily teach science. The stories are targeted to the people that are hearing them. That is why in the old testament you can be stoned to death for simple infractions that Jesus EXPLICITLY overturns in the New Testament...

Ok, I'm sorry. I fed the troll. It just bothers me when people claim that scientific fact and religious fact are at odds. They aren't. They are two sides of one coin, and every time I look closely at them, they agree.

The funny thing about people who believe what Saist believes is that they think that the money that is so called wasted could benefit them!

It is not their money or their time. If there was no Seti project would their lives be any different? NO

Would Mine? Yes... I know that my life would be different...

I would not have met so many nice people here at the forums on such a great TeAm. I have learned a lot of new things about computers and how to get the most out of them and I have new friendships I never would of had.:)

Hey Saist, "according to scientific facts," powered flight will never work, we will never break the sound barrier, etc. Oh wait, those "facts" were superceded by advancements in technology and scientific knowledge. I have a better idea, Saist. Why not F.O.A.D.? :disgust:

EDIT: Was going to Link the various articles regarding the research benefits that SETI@Home has already had, but decided that the smarmy, brainless git that started the Thread is not worth the trouble.

FWIW, I happen to be a Creationist, JHutch and yet I have no problems with dinosaurs and the fossil record - it's not an issue for me, just part of the wonder of what is. :)

Additionally, I have no problem with believing that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe.. whether we'll ever find it or even then be able to communicate with it, I don't know. To not even try looking or questioning the elements around us would be the graver mistake.

And I believe that with any quest(DC project or not), it's the journey that's most significant and not always the end result. ;)

I thought the earth was the center of the universe and they were all aiming their signals directly at us......

Whether I am a creationist or not, I believe that the possibility or life else where exists....and I like stats.......and who said that God, or god, or Allah, or who/what ever your supreme being is has to tell us everything any way? Did I mention that even if we find out that we are a test in some giant scientists test tube, that I like stats...... :)

I am going to edit and add this, because it is not worth bumping the thread:
Saist wins again!! ;)

The gosphel according to Rich! ....and yes, the world is flat!

:p

No. Letting your GHz computer run without 100% CPU utilization while you post meaningless garbage, now, that my friend, is a waste of time, energy and finances.

I'm with NWM on this except I don't really care if we look for them or not. I can't really see discovering ET life effecting me in this lifetime but who knows. I guess its a lack of ambition on my part. If we don't discover them they'll eventually discover us right?:)

Now where is Crazee is his famous post?:D

Please note that Saist was not bold enough to have Private Messaging enabled. Obviously, he doesn't welcome discussion of his oh so eloquently stated facts. But he'd have to be a Sadist to post this note and survive the messages.
