Is screaming really a natural reaction?

They do it all the time in the movies. Someone comes upon something icky, dead, or gory and they let out a scream. I don't think that happens in real life. We scream if someone jumps out at us, someone grabs us, an animal jumps out at us, a mouse runs out of nowhere, but when we see or "witness" something awful do we really let out a scream like in the movies? If you see a plane about to crash, would you scream, or just say OH MY GOD? If you see someone’s head laying in the road after a car accident, would you scream or simply grab your mouth and say OH MY GOD. Or, OH SH#T! Or, OH FU#K!
So what’s with this screaming thing when witnessing the awful on a movie or tv show?
I don't believe people react that way. We only yell or scream when we are unexpectedly frightened. Like BOO! Not when we see a dog flattened in the road, a car about to crash, or come upon a terrible car accident. That’s a simple OH MY GOD reaction.
Or... when you come upon a pointless forum posting, then you might let out a SCREAM!!!! 😀

I can't watch Brokeback Mountain for the same reason i can't watch horror movies. I would scream 'HE'S RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!!' in the middle of the theater.

That qualifies. Anything pointy coming at you would justify a scream. Then maybe followed by the "OH MY GOD", "OH SH#T", and or "OH FU#K" reaction... 😀

yes, people do scream. case in point; somehow a bird got in our basement and died on the top stair. My wife was coming up the stairs and started screaming hysterically. This was just a bird, i can only imagine if she finds a dead body.

I really wish american schools taught more stuff.

Screaming is one of the many survival instincts. Its to alert others in the pack to danger. You need to work really hard to overcome instincts.

Yes, but is it a natural reaction or is it a learned reaction? Do women scream because it's in the DNA or do women scream because women in movies screamed and it caught on?
