omg that movie was terrible. "hey man, we have these tanks, we're just chillin and smokin, sure we'll go help you get that gold".

No it wasn't. It was hilarious.

Give it a try with an open mind. Did you watch the whole thing? Watch it in widescreen, too. This is one movie where you miss a LOT of subtle humor if you see it in pan and scan.

oh you're right. i watched it with a closed mind and stopped half an hour from the end. it was pan & scam too.

i hereby roll my eyes at you:  and once more

Nope.

I like Tora Tora Tora, Patton, Stalag 17, The Great Escape, and many other films a lot better. I didn't really like Pvt. Ryan.

The Piano is also a great drama set during a war.

I think you mean "The Pianist"

The Piano was set in New Zealand and you get to see Harvey Keitel's package. That scarred me for a long time.

Nice to see some of the older crowd out to educate the young'ns that there were good war movies made more than a few years ago.

Band of Brothers was certainly better than Saving Private Ryan, but both were very good films.

My list:

Das Boot (Director's cut adds so much more!)
Lawrence of Arabia
The English Patient
Schindler's List (can't believe so many missed this one!)
Escape from Sobibor
Stalag 17
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
Hamburger Hill (not sure if this should really be on the list)
Apocalypse Now
Dr. Zhivago (no, not the stupid remake - get the damn original!)
Glory (fricken' awesome!)
The Patriot (good, but not great)
Patton
Helen of Troy

there are other, less obscure, and foreign films that should be on here, but their titles escape me at the moment (which isn't hard to do.. 😉 )

WHOOPS! You're right. Sorry about that. 😱

It's a very good movie, but there are many that are better

Apocalypse Now
Das Boot
Stalingrad
Gallipoli
...

The raw power of the opening scene of SPR on the big screen was awe inspiring. The story was pretty weak though...

Since people are mentioning Band of Brothers, I thought that Ken Burn's Civil War series should also be mentioned.

Also Kurosawa's movie RAN, is a great film.
