Is running through a dead stoplight the same as running a red/stop sign?

Three stoplights, one after another, were all out on this street I was travelling on. The lady in front of me stops at the first one but totally blows through the second and third at full speed. She was very lucky there was no traffic coming the other way.

Is this considered the same as running a red light or stop sign?

funny that you would call it a "dead" stoplight. stoplight "of death" would have also been acceptable.

Well this thread resolved itself nicely. And much quicker than normal, too.

Actuallies the car in the intersections first has the right of way making it a 4 way go in most cases. That is Californians laws anyway.

I take great punishment that you would label all Californians like that. I have yet to meet any idiots in our great states.

Yep, a dead signal is a stop sign, or a flashing red.

Traffic was horrible on my road last week around rush hour when all the lights were malfunctioning, huge intersections and every signal was just blinking red. Hectic. Goes to show how much we depend on traffic signals.

If I had the times to dictate Californias penal codes to you I would but I dont. I believes it can be read as thus " A drivers entering an intersections with a disabling light will treat the disabling light as a 4 way go."

Well I disagree! It should be treated like a regular stoplight. The first person that needs to use it gets out of his car and directs traffic, and then every 4 cars they switch off!*

*only if they're on a treadmill.

I hereby retract my statement. I guess I should have counted on someone coming in and going counter to the common sense viewpoint.
I have underestimated you once again, ATOT :(

You know, it's hard to tell when you're joking over the Internet when you don't use any emoticons.

Penal codes, eh? The more you type, the less I think you know what you're talking about.

I frequently hear traffic reports on the radio and television of offline traffic lights. They are always accompanied by the stock "offline or malfunctioning traffic lights must be considered a 4-way stop" announcement. That bothers the hell out of me -- why aren't they saying it is an all-way stop? Those with common sense know how to interpret what they are saying, but I know a *LOT* of people that have no common sense whatsoever, and would probably blow right through a stop light that is offline, if it is a 3-way or 5-way intersection.
