is RTS gaming dead?

I am bored of rinse and repeat shooters and sports sims, don't have the patience to play an RPG. What I used to like was skirmishes on Warcraft 3 and C&C. I know HOTS is out but I didn't really enjoy SC2, so gave it a skip. Is there anything else coming soon.

Company of Heroes 2

Could possibly count in Total War(Hammer) Fantasy-based due sometime.

Not sure of any others due 'soon'.

I hated Warcraft 3 so by that metric its been dead to me for a while now.

But Act of War and World in Conflict have been keeping me happy. I am not currently looking forward to anything. I have all the Total Wars from steam and slowly been working through them.

Starcraft 2 is pretty popular. Sorry that you didn't enjoy it.

Rome: Total War is coming out later this year. That is sure to be a huge hit. Grand strategy games are rising in popularity.

Mobas are also basically RTSs where you control 1 unit. I mean, it started as a Warcraft 3 mod, so...

Assuming they don't pull another Empire. Shogun 2 was so good in part because all of the factions were essentially balanced right out of the starting gate, using the same variety of units.

Rome has more diversity. Hope they handle it well.

Try Men of war if you haven't already to kill time til aforementioned games come out. Call to arms doesn't have a release date yet but looks interesting.

Either way, I'm sure it'll sell just because it carries the Rome name. I'll be mad if it doesn't live up to it, though.

Company of Heros 2
Planetary Annihilation

They are the two to watch out for IMO. Also someone else mentioned mobas, stuff like league of legends is fun for people who are/were big on RTS games. Very popular too.

If AoE2 HD sells a lot of Steam copies then that may catch a developer's attention telling them there is still interest in RTS games. It may convince someone to make more. Its all a big if and speculation but there is a small chance it could happen.

TW: Rome 2
C&C: General 2
Company of Heroes 2

Not sure if they will all be out in 2013:

Unfortunately C&C Generals 2, is now just C&C and it was announced it was going to be free to play and multi-player only. They later decided to go ahead and tack single player back on(after fan outcrys).

They originally called it the next big BioWare franchise(when they were renaming every studio they had Bioware) but have subsequently renamed the studio developing it back to Victory Games.

I don't have much hope for this game.

Generals 2 looked good.. but yeah now I think this game has no hope.. it's going to be Age of Empires Online all over again.

I wish these companies would stop making these moves in a pure profit vacuum. If even ONE of them played games they would understand that RTS fans have nothing in common with MMORPG fans. RTS is a get in, destroy your opponent in less than 20 minutes and GG. Or you have your long drawn out single player campaign player who wants to get his upgrades build a mass army and then storm the AI. Microtransactions and crappy repeatable missions have no place in this genre. Freemium = FAIL

Myth was great. Whatever happened to that company.... Grungie? Frungy? Schmungie? Something like that. I bet if they were still around they'd be turning out awesome PC games.

LOL...ever hear of a little game called Halo? Or rather...the Halo Universe. (no doubt you have)

Bungie is really good at making a game world come alive. Each game they made had it's own history, mythology, and background. So many details there for the imagination.

Look! Sarcasm just flew over your head!

🙂

I really liked Dawn of War, but Company of Heroes really wore thin pretty quick for me. I want to give StarCraft a spin because I loved the first one but so little time and so many other things to do.

I haven't enjoyed an RTS since Rise of Nations. Apparently Microsoft doesn't own that IP either so chances of RoN2 (WIthout the magical BS) ever occurring are unkown

is RTS gaming dead just because some moron from the internet doesn't like current RTS games?

Answer = no
