All this po(o)p/(c)rap is getting annoying.

i kinda agree.. i love nu-metal !
I'm not too much into wailing guitar's, i love melodic riffs and songs you can scream to.
Or i like stuff like Steve Vai's Flying in A Blue Dream.. i like that kinda guitar... stuff that inspires 🙂

that was Joe Satriani, not Steve Vai. But it's an easy mistake to make, they both play a lot of instrumental rock guitar. And Vai was a guitar student of Satriani's! So a REALLY easy mistake to make. 🙂

oopsie.. lol
Can you recommend any other pieces similar to Flying in A Blue Dream.. thanks 🙂

That's because it's South Florida. There are at least 4 rock stations in Austin, and 3 in Houston.

...This is also why we're not going to have any memorable "mega-stars" that we're still going to be listening to 30 years from now. Does anyone think we'll be listening to Brittany Spears in 20 years? Any of those "American Idol" twits? Anyone? No. Now, how about bands like the Rolling Stones, or Led Zeppelin? Yes we will...because that music was based on talent and creativity.
Fritzo is correcto! The other cRap being played doesn't last 6 months, let alone decades. It actually takes skill to play instruments and compose real music. Big shoes to fill, eh? Who can, or will carry the torch?

As long as we have their recordings... WHO CARES!

Music is all synthesized and cold sounding these days...mostly because everything is recorded the standard way using standard drum tracks and standard synthesized riffs with singers doing canned lyrics and stereotypical hiphop dance moves. It's really sickening. I've played guitar for 20 years now, and I know of the amazing talent out there that goes untapped because they don't fit the profile of a record exec's vision of what should be on the radio. Artists are even judged on their appearance as much as their talent now: do you think someone like Aretha Franklin could become popular today? She'd have a really tough time of it! I do agree that there are fads and interests come and go, but the problem is music companies have complete control over those fads and interests now, so music is going to be engineered and spoon fed to you whether you want it or not. I really hate music today because of this. This is also why we're not going to have any memorable "mega-stars" that we're still going to be listening to 30 years from now. Yes we will...because that music was based on talent and creativity. Hopefully some day someone will realize this and put music back into the hands of musicians instead of corporate lampreys latching on to strands of talent hoping to suck money out of it.

aretha is a great example, it's NOT just her appearance that would have gotten her nixed, also the fact that her sound is soo unique, ironically it's EXACTLY that sound tha makes her so amazing.

WTF? How did I mis that? I also discovered a European group (Stratovarius) recently; they're good also, but their style is somewhat different from DT's.

Oh, and I'd have to agree with what was said by others - music goes in phases, and also lots of recent music sucks because of the way the RIAA handles things. 🙁 :|

I live in South Florida as well and it's about quality not quantity. Also don't forget about the 3 or 4 "easy listening" stations or 3 or 4 latin stations. 🙂

For me rock is not dying because I keep in contact with it. Go to shows, buy the cd's, and get the t-shirts. I'm glad I don't hear the music I like on the radio and on the tv 24/7 because it makes it that much more better the times I listen to it. I rather have rock not be in the forefront because then costs of merchandise go up and tickets are harder to get. I rather go to a small club to see my favorite band(20 feet from me) than a huge arena where I can only see them 500 feet away.

This should definately be changed to is Rock and Roll losing popularity because it will never die, just like rap will never die, and just like 80's hair bands will never die. They still exist, just have very little popularity that doesn't come out to the masses.

Forgot to mention that South Florida has a lot of local rock bands that do shows every weekend. So just because you don't know about it or are not interested in it doesn't mean it's dieing. 😛

There is a huge independent music industry that is completely separate from the corporate nonsense. Search for Bob Schneider (on Google or elsewhere😉), or Jim Bianco if you want to hear good independent music.

You should check out blistered-earth.com. 80's style metal from Massachusetts. They only have a couple songs up there now, but they had a lot on mp3.com. They do a great cover of The Hellion / Electric Eye.

Has anyone heard the newest single from Jet? "Cold Heart Bitch"

If I didn't know better I would have thought AC/DC had made a comeback. It's an amazing song and makes me want to jam out every time I hear it. Jet's CD might be the one to make me break my 2-year boycott of RIAA products.

its all dead, because its all been done before. no originality left. just ripping off old riffs(new rock) and sampling(rap).

I thought that the first time I heard Seven Nation Army. I thought Bon Scott had risen from the dead.

I hate nu-metal. Give me the proper stuff any day. Screaming vocals suck IMHO, I like stuff you can sing to, or do air-guitar to. Melodic riffs are good though 😀

I have the Helloween cover of Electric Eye, such a brilliant version, I don't like the Judas Priest one too much, but the cover is good. Might have to listen to this other cover.

It's not dead, but IMO it's nowhere near as good as it used to be. Right now I'm listening to Pink Floyd's The Wall on vinyl so my opnion may be a little skewed. 😀

Heart is another example. Current record execs would have Nancy Wilson dump her sister Ann because she doesn't have "the look".

The 80's had hair bands. The early 90's had "grunge". The late 90's was nu-metal or however you want to call that. At this point it's pop diva's and rap.

As for the whole minorities thing. There are 20million hispanics, 18million blacks, and 250million+ whites. Race doesnt have anything to do with it.

No, but the "it's cool to be 'urban'" mindset of today's youth does.

You just have to find the bands... there are TONS of underground bands, and not so well known bands. Check out Relapse Records... they have a ton of good bands signed.

*EDIT* Black Label Society's new album is good. Superjoint Ritual has also been stuck in my playlists for a while. I can't think of the name of the band... but Phil from Pantera is still making good music.

I was 18 when "The Wall" was released. Everybody thought rock was dying then, too.

i sorta agree with this and what fritzo said
.....the "rock and roll" of today is nothing like the rock and roll of the 60's 70's and maybe shouldn't be categorized with it

and i wouldn't say rap is amazingly popular at my college (CU boulder) i barely hear it..... i hear alot more heavy metal, hard rock, and stoner music....

and i just had an aphinay in class today as to why i might not like rap/hip hop/etc. is because there are 3 things that make up music: rythm, melody, and harmony........and i know it has rythm but does it have both melody and harmony?

(im wondering if anyone with knowledge of music knows if typical rap/hip hop has melody and harmony?)

Really, there's a lot of great modern rock out there. The problem is with obnoxious corporate-run radio stations that play the same 2 Linkin Park songs over and over, between hour-long blocks of stupid commercials.

I've got The Dark Side of The Moon on vinyl too. The Wall is my mom's and DSOTM is mine. Bought it today for $6. I didn't exist when The Wall was released. 😉
