By definition, people who believe in religion are fools. If an adult believed in Santa Claus he would be laughed at and ridiculed. The same standard should be applied to fools who believe in a guy who can walk on water and come back from the dead. So, no, OP, religion and real science cannot mix. Only fools believe in fairy tails. Everyone knows this.

This recent science-religion debate is mostly a very American thing.

I disagree. This debate exists in South Korea, Australia, and Turkey, to name a few places where colleagues bemoan religious interference with their research and teaching. I don't disagree that it's more prevalent in the US, though. Much of that might be explained by American society's tendency to polarize issues.

I think it just comes down to how people compartmentalize their faith. There are deeply religious people that are also scientists or just very intelligent. That doesn't mean I approve of the process but it is possible.

Probably,but putting on a big show is an American specialty;we have our own creationists but they are a lot more tame.
