I know this is borderline P&N, but posts there digress way too fast into "screw u." So, mods, please leave it here for a little while, at least!

For a current example, lets use the new immigration reform law in Arizona: AZ Illegal Immigration Bill Becomes Law

The vast majority of illegal aliens in Arizona are hispanic. Of Arizona's total population, about 25% are hispanic (counting legal and illegal).

Now, in a case like this, how is it inherently racist to use a persons race as a way of increasing the effectiveness of law enforcement? Since 99% of illegals are likely to be hispanic, and only 25% of your population is hispanic, then you can instantly cut out 75% of potential suspects.

Conversely, how can such a law be taken seriously by hispanics when nearly all of the people being deported are also hispanic? How can you defend that law from crys of racism? Even if you, as the enforcer of the law, are not racist -- how do you explain to other citizens that just because everyone being deported is hispanic, that doesn't mean there's an institutional prejudice against hispanics?

Is racial profiling only acceptable when it's focused on the ethnicity of majority? e.g. school shooters are likely to be middleclass white kids? Or even the recent government reports a resurgence of neo-nazi activity in the midwest. It should be pretty obvious to most people that the vast majority of skinheads are white. It would be seem silly to waste resources investigating a group of Nigerian foreign-exchange students for involvement with neo-nazi's, right? But it doesn't seem quite as acceptable to scoff at that sort of obviousness when the target of your derision is most likely to be a member of a minority, not a majority.

Honestly I think you need to give a good definition of "racist" before you ask that question. Is noticing that someone's race is different than mine being racist? Or is it only racist if I discriminate against that person because he is a different race than me?

Only when it is used against minorities.

If it is used against the white man, there isn't a problem with it.

racial profiling? WTF does that even mean?

If someone is breaking the law, and the cops think they are breaking the law, its the cops' jobs to arrest that person.

Now if you are talking about me seeing an Asian chick and assuming that she is a shitty driver....I think its true but probably not fair.

It's never racist.

This.

A local paper typically refuses to put the race of suspects in their articles. I've seen practically the same writeup on the local TV station about suspects and the only difference in the paper's identical story is they'll leave out the race of the suspect....which is idiotic, when you consider that these stories are supposed to help people know who to look out for.

In larger matters, like terrorism, it's asinine NOT to racially profile. Seriously.....if a known terrorist is named Abdul Machmoud and is from Saudi Arabia......why would you NOT be giving an extra look at every middle eastern person who matches the description?

I care. People are always blindsided when I act like an aggressive asshole. Trust me on this.

You should be careful. While it's true most Asians are pussies, there are a few who fit the "kung fu" racial stereotype and will kick your balls out through your mouth if you fuck with them. Everyone knows this.

In high school, this Asian kid through a book at me all Chinese star like. It felt like someone drop kicked me upside the head.

He was one of those guys that could throw playing cards and make them stick in trees. Or so I heard....the only kung fu I saw first hand was the book. And I never really SAW that....only felt it.

What'd you do to make someone throw a book at you?

LOL I knew TFP was Asian. I fucking knew it.

I thought everyone knows this...?

It isn't necessarily racist when carefully combined with many other techniques to weed out perps, but most of the time that it is applied, it is racist because it becomes the defining mark that people look for. One is making the call simply based on looks, which people don't control anyways. Will many illegals be hispanics, especially considering where this country is located and who its neighbors are? Yes. But are all hispanics/mexicans/latino/whatever illegals? No. Not at all. Is it okay to go ahead and put an entire group under undue scrutiny and harass them? I say that it is absolutely not.

It is about purposely denying one group basic rights on the assumption that they all are criminals in some form or another solely because of the way they look. If someone is going to make an assumption that another person is some kind of criminal, I want to hear more than "Zomg he is Mexican and drives an old car...gotta be illegal!"; actually, I would be embarrassed for that person to make such a claim. Making race as THE factor to pick up your criminal makes for pretty shitty forensics, and it makes it painfully easy for others to go right through those filters.
