Is python worth learning?

This is just a very general question, so I figured I may be safe posting it here.

I code primarily in PHP, have done some Flash apps, just dabbled a bit in .NET stuff...but keep hearing about Python.

Anyone here have any experience with it? I don't know of many major sites coded in Python, nor how easy common activities are to perform in it (I figured it must have been somewhat annoying, because Pinar (sp?) is so popular). Also, why do people keep mentiong Django? Is it pretty much needed as a Python coder?

Just wanted some thoughts, and ATOT has more minds to pick for light stuff, where as the programming forum seems to be more for real "how to" questions (which they do a great job with!).

Hmm..this is not going as intended. Some of you must speak the language...!? (not the language of the deal. 😛)

It's pretty useful for coding custom apps and scripts for ESRI's ArcGIS software. Sounds like you're looking at using it for web development though. Don't know how useful it is there.

You know, you raise a good point. I've seen lots of personal desktop uses for Python (and now you just answered why some people at UMaine had Python installed with ArcGIS I suppose. 😛), but not a whole lot in the web domain, though they insist it is a good platform for that..I just don't have many details or opinions to go by. 🙂
