Actually the IQ generated from the A30 is considerably better with a less grainy picture & deeper colors, enough so that its all I use for SD-DVD's now & the only thing I like better about the PS3 is its zoom feature which does a better job filling the screen without distorting the picture.

Which is it then, slightly or considerably better? I'm almost tempted to drive up to Connecticut & see for myself!:D

Image clarity & color reproduction are enough better with the A30 so its not hard to notice but zoom/stretch features are better on the PS3 & it responds much more quickly to input commands so the A30 gets the slight edge overall for SD playback IMO.

Interestingly the only exception to this in my movie collection is the original Highlander DVD which is known as one of the worst IQ DVD's ever made but for some reason looks much better when played back on the PS3 ... no idea why.

I am thinking of getting the PS3 for a BR player.
Right now, I use my HD DVD (Toshiba A3) for up converting SD movies. Does the PS3 play SD movies and if so, how is it on the up conversion?
I only have one HDMI on my TV and may have to wait for a combo player when prices come down.

I had a Samsung upconverting player before I got my PS3 and the PS3 blows the Samsung I had out of the water for upconversion. I am extremely happy with the PS3 for my needs, I just need to wait for these: http://ir2bt.com/cart/ to come back in stock so I can order one, then it will be almost perfect (can't do much about the look of the PS3, which I hate).

Lol if you have a receiver that can decode the HD formats you probably don't want to use a PS3...its known to cause HF popping noises which can destroy tweeters.

I ain't touching the PS3 with a 10 foot pole as a blue ray player.

This is the reason why I gave the PS3 a 9 and not a 10. My receiver has the analog inputs but no HDMI, so it would be a really nice feature. However, I wanted the PS3 for gaming anyways, so the Blu-Ray player is a huge plus.

To my knowledge, that was an issue with Onkyo receivers and bitstreaming from Blu-Ray players, not just PS3s. Denon receivers exhibited no such issues.

The PS3 is still one of THE top Blu-Ray players. You can nit pick ANY component to death, but the PS3 is really at the top of the heap when it comes to Blu-Ray players.

I also want the PS3 as my second Blu-ray player. I hope to be able to snag the new 80GB bundle on the 12th.

That's right, stick it to the PS3!

Now go out and buy any other Blu-ray player that can bitstream the advanced codecs to your Onkyo 805 with no fear of popping!

Oh wait, is that backwards?

Better reconsider which equipment you actually want to purchase.

I'd much rather this over the PS3. Walmart has it for $350 and it comes with a $100 walmart giftcard.

While I could care less that it doesn't have BD Live, no DTS-HD MA support makes it a no go for me. That $100 giftcard also applies to the PS3.

It bitstreams DTS-HD MA. Internal decoding is supposed to come in a later firmware update I think.
