I have the feeling that a lot of people think that guys are better at programming than girls. What do you think of it? I know a lot of girls who are programming wise and technical wise as sound as some of my guy friends. So why is it that a guy has more chance of getting a technical job than a girl?

It's not that guys are neccesarily better at it, I just think that guys are more likely to be interested in it.

I go to Clarkson University for computer science, and the male/female ratio schoolwide is 7/1. My comp sci class however is nearly half and half, probably 5/4 or 5/3. The thing is that out of those females, I don't believe a single one has an A in there, whereas there are probably 9 people or so in our class of 60 that have A's(myself being one). Take that as you will, but I believe that most males taking comp sci take it because they want to, whereas females might have been "convinced" by their parents or something as I've never met a female that has a particular intrest in the area.

Guys are logical, women are not.

:( that's not very encouraging so far... But I second Jolly. I know a lot of girls with sound programming background and a keen interest in learning.

I agree with notfred...it's just that girls don't seem very interested in it.

It's the label that society has put on jobs. You ever notice that most nurses are female?

It was actually a lady who got me interested in programming back in the late 80s. I noticed in programming classes the girls were very reluctant to do anything. I've learned that documentation is one of the most important aspects of programming. This is something most guys suck at, while the girls are much better at it. They are usually better planners while we just dive into the coding aspect.

I definitely dive into the coding while saying the Hell with planning and documentation! I usually end up getting where I wanted to go, but not knowing how I got there...

Mine was a joke. Please don't take is seriously. :)

I'm sure women can be very good programmers, but guys are definitely more interested in it. Not too many women are interested in sitting in front of a computer for long hours typing up code. For whatever reason most women aren't turned on by computers and the real technical aspects of it.

i agree with notfred too, i just think it's more likely a male to be interested in programming than a female. But if a female is interested, i don't think there is anything that could hold her back from being a great programmer.

I know there are several women that are lead programmers at their respective companies(in the gaming industry)...
