Is "power cycle" too technical a term?

It's amazing to me how many people say "I have no clue what you're talking about" when you ask them to power cycle something.

Power Cycle

Is that not self evident?

😕

Viper GTS

"Have you power-cycled the router?"
"Have I what??"
"Uhh, rebooted the router?"
"How the heck do I do that?"
"Turn the power off, then click it back on...."
"Ohhh....nope"

🙂

I didn't know what Power Cycle meant until about 3 months ago. 😱 I always just said "unplug it, wait for 30 seconds and then plug it back in"

yes, it is too complicated. If the customer has done it before, they'll know, but it's not often the cutomers pay attention when they call tech support.

<< "Right Click" is too technical a term >>

for a MAC user, yes. 😛

"so you're saying if I go ride my bike and pedal really hard my connection will be fixed?...ok, I'll try calling again in an hour if it's still down. [click]"

I doubt the avg user knows what it means. Just say "turn it off, then back on", "unplug, then plug it back in after a few seconds"...keeps everyone happy and carefree....ahhhhh 😀

I don't know what it means. Does that make me idiot? Why can't you just say turn the power on and off?

My cousin Shannon, aka myputer on here, was at my house helping me with something one day. We needed her ip, so she told her husband to open an AOL IM window, and right click. He kept saying he did, but nothing was happening. Turns out he was writing the word click and sending it to her brother over AIM. 😀

For people that call me, "network neighborhood" is too technical for them.. and they look at that icon all day..

Because you "think" in the proper terminology.. you are thinking to yourself, "they need to power cycle it"... think about it, there are "dumbed down" terms for everything, and its difficult for people like us to use them.

If someone has that much trouble substituting "simple" words for "complex" words, they shouldn't be doing tech support. Simple as that.

Well, if someone has to be spoken to like a four year old, maybe they should be treated like one (and paid like one) and maybe someone else should be calling tech support.

Yes, I agree...the nearest 5 yr old should be calling tech support 😉

Actually, we're probably talking about completely different areas of tech support. I help a number of people that aren't technically or computer savvy. I take it you deal with people that are supposed to know a lot about computers, etc?

Based on your logic, since you probably don't know what a Laplace transform is, you are a 4 year old from my POV?

Laplace
Transform

Or how about phospholipid bilayer?
phospholipid
bilayer

What?? You don't know what a phospholipid bilayer is??

Yes, actually, I talk to Network Admins, technicians, etc... people who should know these terms, and they arent any better than end users a lot of the time. I wouldnt look down on end users, they could be doctors, lawyers, etc, not computer guys/gals, but the people I talk to, and the people viper talks to, are paid to know what they are talking about. More than us, to be exact.

(god I am glad tommorow is my last day)

No, I dont. nor do I get paid to know what that is. And if for some reason, I needed to work with it, I would research it previous to doing so.

But you eat phospholipid bilayers every day!! How can you not know what they are??

😛😉

i do think power-cycle is too techical for the averge computer idiots. 🙂

tell them to turn it off and on, thats what I say, then they say, "so you mean power-cylce it?" 😱😉

danny~!

Well when your cable modem doesn't have a power switch, some ppl might have trouble trying to figure that out. Good thing i'm not RR tech support...
