Is "power cycle" too technical a term?

It's amazing to me how many people say "I have no clue what you're talking about" when you ask them to power cycle something.

I didn't know what Power Cycle meant until about 3 months ago. I always just said "unplug it, wait for 30 seconds and then plug it back in"

yes, it is too complicated. If the customer has done it before, they'll know, but it's not often the cutomers pay attention when they call tech support.

I doubt the avg user knows what it means. Just say &quot;turn it off, then back on&quot;, &quot;unplug, then plug it back in after a few seconds&quot;...keeps everyone happy and carefree....ahhhhh

My cousin Shannon, aka myputer on here, was at my house helping me with something one day. We needed her ip, so she told her husband to open an AOL IM window, and right click. He kept saying he did, but nothing was happening. Turns out he was writing the word click and sending it to her brother over AIM.

Because you &quot;think&quot; in the proper terminology.. you are thinking to yourself, &quot;they need to power cycle it&quot;... think about it, there are &quot;dumbed down&quot; terms for everything, and its difficult for people like us to use them.

Well, if someone has to be spoken to like a four year old, maybe they should be treated like one (and paid like one) and maybe someone else should be calling tech support.

Yes, I agree...the nearest 5 yr old should be calling tech support

Actually, we're probably talking about completely different areas of tech support. I help a number of people that aren't technically or computer savvy. I take it you deal with people that are supposed to know a lot about computers, etc?

Yes, actually, I talk to Network Admins, technicians, etc... people who should know these terms, and they arent any better than end users a lot of the time. I wouldnt look down on end users, they could be doctors, lawyers, etc, not computer guys/gals, but the people I talk to, and the people viper talks to, are paid to know what they are talking about. More than us, to be exact.
