Yesterday I was watching Food Network and one of the chefs said that Porterhouse is half filet minion and the other half is t-bone or NY steak.

Was he right?

edit: What cut of steak do you usually pick up when you guys are going to bbq?

I'm dead broke so I can't pick up anything tonight but I get paid on the 23rd which will mean I'll probably buy some groceries.

The basic guide is that on a T-bone/Porterhouse, the large side is the NY steak, and the small side is the tenderloin (fillet).

i prefer a strip steak most of the time, a skirt steak is cheap and good if you do it right (a quick sear on each side is best)

try this strip steak recipe its fantastic, and very easy. i usually sautee some mushrooms with mine.

I usually buy Chuck steaks. Some times lower my standard to a Porterhouse or Rib Eye.

I like them all, ribeye good foro some, and t-bone for ithers. But most often deciding factor is cost, which is why I had a ton of steak this week, 3.99/lb for t-bone at the HEB. So bad for me but I have had only red meat this week.

I don't buy steak at the supermarket.

Supermarket steaks=crap. Find a good local butcher or place that carries prime or choice cuts of beef.

I get Sirloin tip steaks for sanwiches, and If i'm going to grill I get NY Strips or better yet (to us anyways) Sirloins. We like our meat "solid" or chewy, not all mushy like some people ..

Or pink inside!

Well done all the way!!

Heh, I'd love to purchase my meat from a butcher (Lobel's) but it'd probably cost me 2 to 3 times what I pay now :(

yep, he's right. And a t-bone is also the same thing but a lower cut with less filet.

-edit- meant higher cut.

what do I pick up? Porterhouse, about 1.5-2"

Ribeye are not good for grilling unless you slow cook them indirectly. Not really a fast cook steak.
