Is Polk Audio a good speaker company?

im looking to buy surround sound speakers, and i heard polk audio's are good, anyone else have these or know of better speakers?

They will be fine for surround speakers. They are good, but not great....and for surrounds, it really won't matter unless the rest of your system is much higher end.

whats better then: polk, jbl, athena, yamaha, Precision Acoustics, infinity? out of that list please. spending about $1200 for 5 speakers and one subwoofer

Depends on the ear, really. I have an ear for Polk...they just sound good to me. I recommend listening to as many brands as possible though. IMO Polk is the best mid-level speaker, or the best you can get without jumping to a much larger price.

Please, for the love of all that's holy, do not buy Bose. That is all I ask.

Anthena is Very good. Their Floorstanders are excellent.

I've been using a pair of Polk mid/large size bookshelf speakers for the last 10 years or so. I'm still very satisfied with them.

I shopped around a lot at the time and they were the best sounding of everything I tested.
The sound from the different brands/models really does vary significantly, so you've really got to go and listen to them.
"side-by-side" comparisons are best, with clean music with a wide-range between highs and lows (bring your own CD and have them play it).

[disclaimer: I'm not rich, so I didn't/couldn't consider the super hi-end stuff]

Absolutely no question.. Athena

For surrounds, the Audition series is excellent. Athena is the only brand you'll be seeing with rave reviews in Audiophile magazines..

🙂 I'll give some suggestions for online stuff.

So you don't need a receiver?

For a sub on a $1200 budget, an SVS PB10 or HSU STF-2 would make really good choices.

Leaving about $750 for speakers....
You could get Ascend Acoustics with 170s in a 5.0 configuration.

You could get something going from axiom audio too.

Onix ELTs are very nice too.

There are a lot of great internet speaker companies, and I'm almost certain all of those I listed have a policy where you can buy a set of speakers and try it out for a period of time. If you don't like them, you can send them back and only lose the return shipping cost.

If you're more into music than movies, you could probably get away with a lesser sub and invest more in the speakers. A good sub adds a lot to the movie experience though.

As always, I'm going to recommend heading over to AVSforum and hometheaterforum. You'll get a LOT of suggestions over there. I'm sure there are numerous threads over there already asking this exact question. AVSforum is to HT as Anandtech is to Computers 😀

EDIT: oh, and don't forget Paradigm. The performance series would offer you great value. Atoms are $199/pair usually and Titans are $229/pair I think. A couple sets of those and the 170 or 270 center (whichever matches the driver size of the bookshelves you pick) would make a nice set. There are paradigm dealers all over the place.

True.

But their LSi line is really nice and at a good price point. All paradigm series grate my ears with their horrendous squaking - except for the reference series. Man I wish they still made the active 40s.

LSi is the audiophile level. Indeed they're good.

Also consider these guys (loved by audiophiles for bang/buck):

AV123
Ascend Acoustics
Axiom

They make good products, but are mainly loved by internet forums. Hyped beyond belief IMHO. But they do have alot of bang for the buck factor. I picked up some rockets a while back but had to send them back - too soft/laidback.

what about this setup: 2 fronts are the polk audio RTi8 towers, 2 rear are the RTi4 Bookshelve speakers, center is the Polk CSi3, and the 10 inch polk sub(psw10)

i also saw for rear speakers the surround sound effects ones, F/Xi3's, are they better than the bookshelves? lemme know about previous setup and if i should sub thesse rear speakers into previous. thanks
