Is Photoshop considered to be overkill for most people?

I just feel like I would have no idea what to do if photoshop never entered my life. It feels nice that I can work with images that are so large and do so many image modifying things like (enhancement/better picture quality). Do you use photoshop? Think it's overkill?
 
I don't think so, no. I think it's just something someone has to be taught, either by themselves or someone else. PS isn't something that's extremely difficult to learn and use, with regard to the mechanics of the program. It's the creativity that empowers many PS users to pump out works that are head-and-shoulders above the rest of the PS monkeys who think they can just jump in, click a few buttons, and have something that's any good. You can't teach someone to be creative. You can inspire them to take advantage of the creative spark that they already have, but that in itself is the catch.
 
Yes, it is. It's probably even overkill for YOU, but you don't even realize it. When was the last time you madea duotone image, or dealt with alpha channels or TIFF clipping paths? Probably never, but Photoshop has those capabilites.
 
No. I've been using PhotoShop 6.0, 7.0 and now CS for everything I do with images (except viewing, which I just use IrfanView).

most people just need to do some simple tweak of brightness and contrast, and maybe some cropping. that's all.

these simple uses cannot justify the price of Photoshop. there are a whole lot of image manipulation programs out there that are way cheaper (most of them are shareware or even free too).

I work at a photo place when I'm at school. We use photoshop for photo restoration, which normally take an hour, maybe two and costs anywhere between $50-$100. Anyways, I practically never use anything besides smudge, blur, band-aid, or clone stamp. When I use photoshop on my own, for boredom or helping someone with webdesign, I might use some of the deeper features, but I still need a tutorial for anything really cool and complex. Basically, yeah, photoshop has so many features your average (non-professional) user probably only sees the tip of the iceberg.

You don't need Photoshop for that.
 
Most people can do FINE with just irfanview (that allows you to do brightness/contrast, resize, batch resize/convert/rename, and a bunch of other stuff). So yes, Photoshop is overkill for most people.
 
It's way over priced for what the average person needs it for, but the problem is most of the interesting tutorials are for PS.

exactly, most people only need a simple image manipulation program, and they don't need Photoshop for that. that's why Photoshop is overkill for most people.

i think we need a pole 😉
 
yes it is, the full version has features in it that most peopel will never use, it also costs way to much

and this is exactly why there is Photoshop elements, that has most of teh features from the full version and only costs 100$
 
considering photoshop is one of the most pirated programs, i'd say it's overkill for 95% for people that have it. 😛🙂

I wouldn't say that, I was using photoshop elements on the mac (two very bad combos) not only was it slow (could be because of mac) but it was missing features I was used to. Apparently the features I used were considered those for the full version. There were so many things missing it drove me insane and soon gave up using it. I would never purchase elements because the lack of features, though it would have made more sense for my mom to get that instead of the full version:disgust: She mostly uses the smudge feature and a few others but not even close to it's full potential.
