Is PC memory backward compatible?

Possibly a daft question but nevermind...

I have an MSI KT3 Ultra motherboard which supports PC2100 and PC2700 DDR ram. Can I put PC3200 memory in this board and would it run at PC2700 speeds? For one the memory is cheaper and I am also upgrading in the next couple of months so it would be nice to buy memory I'll be able to use in my new system too.

Thanks!

It happened to me before. I thought it wouldn't run but found out it ran at lower speed so I was saved. 😀

one more question..😕
how do i determine if i need a memory kit? or what they refer to as dual channel memory... can i buy a kit and plug it in even though my mother board does not suppport it??

the motherboard is what makes the memory "dual channel", a kit is just memory that has the same timings/speeds.

there really is not dual channel memory for ram, but rather the memory controller on the mb does this. the ram is the same. if your m/b supports dual channel you will need multiples of 2 sticks to benefit.

I actually reccomend gettign PC3200 for two reasons in slower systems:

1. Future compatible

2. Usually the 3200 can run at 2-2-2-5 at pc 2100 or 2700 speeds.
