Is PayPal looking a bit funky to you?

Text is all wacky and plain looking, and where did the golden lock go in the bottom right of the screen indicating you're on a secure site?

Oh, it seems the padlock is only there after logging in. I thought it was there on the main page.

Yes, I was on paypal.com/us.

The reason I checked in the first place is because I got an email that Gmail automatically labeled as Spam that said I sent $195 to some watch company through PayPal. The email From: address was service@paypal.com. Gmail blocked the actual content of the email.

Edit: Now the padlock IS there on the main page. It wasn't just a few moments ago.

I logged in during that small time interval the padlock was not there. Is this bad?

And what about this email I got?

the email sounds like a phising attempt - did Google mark it as such at the top?

Yes it did. It marked it as "spam" and gave me a warning that it may not be from who it claims to be. But how would it know that? The from address is service@paypal.com. And, the email is simply a picture, which is not showing and is not showable, even if you right-click it and hit Show Picture.

And all it says it that I sent a payment to a company. So...what info would they be trying to get from me with that kind of email?

And I'm worried that I logged in when the padlock was NOT PRESENT on PP's website.

Was there a link in this e-mail? Usually there is a link (eg. to Paypal) but will actually go to another site. If Google marked it as a phising mail then that's a good sign it's not legit. Delete all such mails and only ever go to Paypal via the correct link. Did you log into Paypal via the email?

It's SO easy to spoof an e-mail address. If you clicked the link in the e-mail and logged in, go back to PayPal.com and change your password NOW!!! The gold lock is ON my browser when I go to paypal.com so the site you visited was probably FAKE!

No I certainly did not! The email is ONLY a picture which is not displaying, nothing else at all. I wondered what was going on, so I went to PP's website myself, which must've been experiencing a problem because for a BRIEF time there was no padlock on the main page and the text was weird. Then it fixed itself. But I DID log in during that time when there was no padlock. But I saw no suspicious activity.

log in RIGHT NOW (through paypal's website directly) and change your password

then forward the e-mail to abuse@paypal.com

Well I don't get this. PP's site should never not have the padlock, so I feel like I DID log into a fake site, especially since this was right after I got the email. But I didn't click any links in the email! I went straight to the website myself.

Sounds like you should be ok - might be worth changing your password (as kukyfrope suggest) just to be totally safe

Yes I just changed it. Thanks.

But there's no way that email could have redirected me without me clicking a link in it, right? I'm very disturbed that the padlock was not present when I logged in the first time. BUT, as soon as I logged in, the padlock appeared. So should that be alright?

As long as you didn't click on any link on the email, and typed: www.paypal.com directly on your browser, you should be fine...

Well, I typed paypal.com, which directed me to https://www.paypal.com/us/.
