Is overclocking a 1600+ supposed to go THIS easily? Daaaang!

So I get an email from work saying my A7V333-RAID is back from Asus RMA. :)

I go down and pick it up, bring it home and look at the BIOS chip, which is labeled 1005.

mechBgon: :( (this :( ends up being a :) when mechBgon finds out it?s really got the 1012 BIOS inside, no need to flash it and risk losing it again)

Next, I dump it in my case, slap my AthlonXP 1600+ into it, plop my cheesy $6 Coolermaster DP5 heatsink onto it with some AS3, plug in my stick of Crucial PC2100, my drives and my video card, and fire it up. The system automatically jumps to the BIOS and asks me to identify the CPU speed:

A7V333-R:
  • 1050
  • 1400
  • 1750
mechBgon: [Spock voice] Fascinating. [/Spock voice] :Q

Well heck, I better go with 1400 because I?m switching from a K7S5A to an A7V333-RAID, and they?re not the least bit similar so I?ll be reinstalling Win98SE here and? oh wait? it BOOTS :Q   :D

Ooookay. I?ve said it before and I?ll say it again: with all its faults, Win98SE certainly takes the cake for tolerance! It detects stuff, I install 4-in-1's, and it's ready to rumble. I check the socket-thermistor temperature on my iPanel Deluxe: 48C. Hmm, I think this new BIOS is candy-coating the readings, but whatever.

Well hey, lemme try that 1750MHz option. Of course, it?ll never work, I don?t even have PC2700 RAM, and the CPU cooler is not world-class either. So I go into the BIOS, bump the vCore to 1.775 for luck, set it for 1:1 @ 1750MHz, and exit. And POST. And boot. And fire up SETI@home. And do m4d l337 rendering in trueSpace 4.3, yo homes. And it runs fine! iPanel says 53C under load.

So I have a 1750MHz @ 166MHz FSB. What would that be, somewhere around a 2100+? Not bad for a $54 CPU with a $6 cooler! :D Dang, now if I only had some PC2700 RAM? :D Anyway, this sure is a boost from my ol' 1GHz Duron.

the last 3 systems ive built all had xp1600+ cpus, and all of them would run totally default on a 166mhz fsb (with one exception.. one of them needed the vcore increased to 1.775 for total stability)

hehe yup gotta love the xp1600+ :D

MechBgon:

Nice overclock there! Easy isn't it?

I can't wait to see your WU times...

Hehe Duvie, you know I'd love to have a mad l33t P4 OC system too :D In fact, earlier today I thought, "you know, if Intel would make a special P4 with DIP switches along the edge, so the user could DIPswitch in the multiplier and voltage right on the edge of the CPU, they could sell that thing like hotcakes! :D" Or maybe they could put the DIPs on the end of a 2-inch membrane-type flat cable, to get it out from under the heatsink. Just think if you had multiplier control like that.

Well, I will crank SETI work units and see how it goes. I don't think I'd be smart to try cranking the memory timings down, considering it's just PC2100, but that higher FSB usually is exactly what SETI likes. Maybe I will get some sub-3:30 WUs!

Hey! He's not on our MTR TeAm :p Put that thing back@1050 mechBgon where it belongs ;):D J/K I have a 1600+AROIA-Y in my 8K3A@166fsb@1.75v using Crucial 2100DDR@2.6v myself, and an AGOIA-Y@1.88ghz in my 8K3A+using Crucial 2700DDR and I just switched them from ECCp for the MTR and they are knocking out 9WU's a day :Q:D EDIT: Each!

I got a xp1800, and i'm going to unlock it today. I have a MSI Kt3 ultra mb with 2x256mb pc2100 crucial ram. what do you all recommend to clock it at, and the voltage? Do you think it can reach 1800mhz with 166fsb?

peace
