Is optical media write speed an indicator of quality?

I got a mp3 minidisc player as a present. I bought some media and it doesn't read it. The website says it can be because the media is low quality (low reflectivity). I noticed the ones I bought are 1-4x. Some on the net are 24x. Does the higher write speed mean better quality? How do I know the better quality?

Thanks

If possible, email the manufacturer asking what disks it recommends.

Perhaps if you list your player, someone else will tell you what they were successful with.

The manufacturer, Philips, recommends Philips and I can't find their 8cm discs anywhere.

I've tried two different brands now. :( TDK and Memorex.

I have a Philips EXP431 "expanium". It seems pretty rare.
