Is online gaming dead, because of the children?

Is there no respite from the mindless children? Is there no way to get away from them? Is my hobby dead then because of the brats that there parents wont raise? I've really enjoyed the process of upgradeing, considering, And dealing with the latest games. But I'm growing disenchanted starting with eq1 , which had the greatest community early on, untill you couldnt run through greater faydark without a begger asking for platt or armor or a weapon. WOW, Guild Wars and now BF2 are eat up with children. Granted EQ2 isnt but you cant get a group there because of the games design (hello). So only flawded broken games are played by adults? What are your thoughts? Should I be puiitng more effort into getting a ricer?

I was about to say that this is how it has always been, but then I remembered when I used to play Quake TF and TFC and not once in all the time and all the servers I played on were immature players a problem.

I blame the falling price of broadband. And Counter-Strike.

Yes, i think the only reason EQ2 lacks so many kiddos is 2 fold: No PvP (this seems to deter many) and fewer people play it compared to WoW, so your not exposed to as many people when playing it, but even on the higher pop eq2 servers, i have yet to find too many immature kiddos. Guild Wars was a nightmare while in the major cities and Iron Forge on a WoW PvP server is nothing but naked night elf people dancing on the bridge between the bank and auction house or people just acting like morons.

It's still the biggest share of the market, so it's only obvious game companies cater to them.

A possible solution might be (at least for MMOs) to create dedicated servers which could have a higher monthly fee but 3 or 4 times the number of GMs enforcing behaviour and banning all the idiots.

I would gladly pay $30+ a month for WoW if they had a server completely free of smacktards and worked perfectly, but there is now way for either of those to occur.

Unless people quit supporting companies that tolerate this behavior and poor business practices it will remain the same. IMHO game makers focus more on marketing and pushing a game out as fast as possible than having an enjoyable game. Till companies like Blizzard improve they will not make any profit from me.

Dude it's always been like this. We're just getting older. We're not the kids any more.

The problem is that more and more immature kids are being spoiled these days, and they think it's fun to mess everything up, such as all the TK'ing in BF2.

That'd be tempting, if only it were offered.

You could try EVE-Online. You'd really only have to deal with smacktards if you wanted to.

if you want a good role playing experience i think you have to find an intimate group of nerds around town with the appropriate demographics.

online, lots of MUDs are pretty much adults only since all the kids flock to the WoWs.

but if you want the flashy new games you gotta put up with the flashy new kids. just ignore them. I thought city of heroes had a decent population even though they banned my name so i quit.

TKing is almost non-existant on ECGN's servers. There's a bunch of them (most are 64 player servers) and there is almost always an admin on them to kick the offenders.

Title has a lot to do with it. Being a Blizzard game, and being aimed at the casual market, we all knew what WoW's playerbase would be like. With EQ1, changes were made which attracted that sort of crowd, most of them being to make the game easier in one way or another. I'm looking forward to Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. It should be a great title which is "2 hrd n b0r1ng" for all the little ones - just like EQ used to be.

Been asking for this for a long time, and it will come. Just remains to be seen how long it will take, and how many decent MMO players the companies will lose between now and then by dragging their heels. "Screw it, the tards chased me out of too many games already, no point in trying out another." It would seem to me that the grown-ups would keep their accounts active far longer in MMOs they enjoy, while the ADHD types would move on to something else in a matter of months no matter what. So why lose the customers you can get longer term revenue from? Then consider the loss of the players you have who aren't out there talking up the game or recommending it to friends. I sure as heck can't with WoW.

Game companies could easily have the best of both worlds by just adding servers that fit the bill described above. The kids wouldn't lose anything nor be charged any more, so they don't have to worry about how they can afford the monthly subscription AND the new Fiddy CD. The adults get to relax and game (or be serious and game or whatever) which costs the company little more resources and double the monthly fee. I don't even know that it would take a ton more GMs, as the move to the grown-up realm costs money and has to be actively chosen. Then just be a hammer when someone is obviously trying to be disruptive. One warning, like "Stop that flagrant asshattery." Then *smack* move their account straight back to the kiddie-pool and adjust their billing to the lower monthly rate. Just a little bit of this goes a long way.

Think I've got about three hours of play needed to hit 60 in WoW to say I did it, haven't been on in over a month to do it though. Need to get that out of the way and cancel again (unplayable due to lag earlier in year).

for a while I hosted my own TFC, Q1, Q2 servers at my house and tightly policed the users. After about a month I had a LOYAL and dedicated band of consistant players on my servers. No smack talk, no TKing, just straight, teamplay. I ended up giving a few of the more reputable regulars admin rights and allowed them to boot/ban people at their decision. Server and community was perfect... I had a utopia (and a damned low ping :p) then I lost my SDSL :(

I am looking foward to vanguard also. The only problem is..... i believe they said that the xbox 360 xbox live version will play on the same servers as the PC, so the people in that game will probably be worse than WoW or even diablo II becuase we will have the console kiddies on there.

Currently there are no plans to have an xbox version. This has been confirmed on their forums by a member of the development team.

This is excellent news! Hopefully they will keep it that way or at least have separate servers like with EQ and EQ Online Adventures.

Games that usually involve people working together in a social enviornment usually attract less immature players. Just like you mentioned - the original EQ back in the day was full of great mature people who one could roleplay with. These days, the quick rewards of games like Diablo and WoW attract the younger audience with less patience.

There are always MUD's out there, which probably have some of the most mature players available.

They have been denying that they are working on a console version but if you go to sigil's website you see that they are looking for a console programmer. Even if it is brought to consoles the complexity will hopefully deter most of the bnet kiddies and blights on the community.

During EQ1 I was in an 18 and older guild for about 2 years. I can honestly say that was the best time I have had in online gaming. Sure that doesn?t get you around the idiots in public zones, no system is perfect. As we all know there are plenty of idiots that are over 18, and there are plenty of quality mature players that are under. For me it was more about getting like minded people together who?s priorities are more in line. Most of our members were married couples, single parents, or simply full time employed adults so there were rarely hard feelings if you missed a raid because you had to work late, or had to go to a PTA meeting.

I haven?t fully explored EQ2 or WOW yet, but if/when I do I will be looking for a similar arrangement.

I would not have a problem with it if they had seperate servers for xbox and pc.
