Sorry to bump a 2 week old thread, but just wanting to bitch about some OCZ Ram I just got. New system with mobo, CPU HDD, PSU and Ram I built today. Everything is fine except for the Ram. One stick is DOA, doesn't even get recognized by the mobo. It doesn't time itself properly either (1333 Mhz @ 1066MHz).

Only got this because it was on the official supported list on Gigabyte's site. Oh well, I'll try to exchange it for some G.Skill tomorrow.

My opinions are for memory destined for OEM systems, Dell particularly, and I swear by Super Talent memory. I love the stuff.

Not a fault of the RAM; you need to apply the correct timings manually, unless there's JEDEC profile for that speed & the board automatically set it.

OCZ memory IS crap (well, base on my own experience anyways) Their "low-voltage 1.8v" Platinum DDR2-1066 kits would not run at 1066, even after bumping voltages. (Yes, GSkill kits just drop right in and works.) And to think they charges extra for "low-voltage" is very infuriating. When I contact them, their response was "try tinkering with voltages." Never EVER buy another OCZ product, EVER.

I've bought over a dozen OCZ ram modules (DDR and DDR2). Never had an issue with any of them. Have 4GB of OCZ DDR3 on the way ($34.xx after rebates and eBillme from TigerDirect).

Mushkin, GSkill, Crucial, and Corsair...Those are the only brand I 'd touch with a 10ft pole. Good quality, and excellent support.
RAM is RAM. Go for the cheapest quality brand you can afford.

Of the 4 machines running at home, 2 have GSkill, 1 has Mushkin, and my i7 has Corsair.

However, I will never buy Crucial again. Not after the DDR1 Ballistix. They were great overclockers until they all inevitably failed. Their customer service was fine, but I shouldn't have to use it as often as I did.

i've had OCZ 2 gigs once, ran really high voltages and was very fickle w/ what motherboards it would work on, but otherwise, it worked fine.

but i always used gskill and never looked back.
they have great skill in memory world!
i've also had good luck w/ corsair and kingston, but limited experience with thsoe brands.

OCZ is not crap; actually one of the best brands you can buy. EVERY manufacturers these days have faulty ram. There is so much production these days that its hard to keep Quality control up to great standards. Just like anything else, every item in the world is so mass produced that quality will never be what it used to be.
Look at cars for example; They are more expensive and built like sheet now compared to the past. everything is computer controlled and always breaks down or has issues; there is just no way around it.

as for the comment about every ram is the same except different manufacurers put their own heatsink on them is utter BS. They are very similar and the chips may be the same, and come from different bins, but there are also differences in the boards, etc; why do you think you can take the same exact specs, but different manufacturers ram has different performance? Obviously not exactly the same. Granted you can get away with any brand or price range, there are minor performance differences which each person has their own opinions on.

I personally use Mushkin or OCZ, next picks would be Corsair or G-Skill, but you will find problems with all of them no matter how good the company is.

I agree with one that I will never use Crucial again till they get their Sheet together. I used to buy Crucial exclusively, but they have a known history of failing ram. I currently have to rma 3 different DDR2 kits. Again to the one guys comment about ram all the same. in the DDR2 era, crucial ram smoked everyone else in actual performance according to tests, but have known issues...so much for all ram being the exact same. Plus if all ram was the same, there would not be all the compatability issues.

Anyway, bottom line is that OCZ is not crap, if you think so, them its all crap and your out of luck.

If you do not like OCZ cause of your experience, I recommend Mushkin, g-skill, or Corsair. Good luck with your next set.

Are those Ballistix or standard models?
