There hasn't been since the middle 70's. The reason? It wasn't cool to be a Hippie anymore. Long Hair and smoking dope doesn't make one a Hippie. It was a real counter culture movement that was joined by many who were looking to being Hip. Well once it became mainstream it was no longer hip. I was a teenager and young adult in the early 70's and by that time Hippies were passe'

How would you refer to someone matching that description now, though? IE long hair, sandals, active in counter-culture activities, etc...
 
By that definition above they would be called a hippie, but some take the definition to mean someone of that type from the 60s - early 70s times. Whenever I hear or see the word "hippie" I get a mental picture of the stereotypical 60s dude though.
