Is NT 4.0 Server obsolete?

I have a NT 4.0 Server CD which I never used. Currently, I'm using W2K Pro for my desktop and was thinking of using W2K Server for some small scale server functions. Does 4.0 still have any life left in it? For my curiosity I really won't spend for W2K Server.
Is there any chance someone would want to trade? Someone just may want another 4.0 license?

depends what you want to do, and what type of hardware nt 4.0 is to be installed on.

Depends on what you are going to install on it. Otherwise, IMO it is just as usefull as Win2k Server.

I was thinking of mostly 2D games for little kids.

Dude, what's DX? Is that another thing I need to learn about?

U can go up o DirectX5 using the NT5 beta DirectX... works fine and stable.

NT4 is fine, just doesn't do as much as 2k... depends on your needs

I could have sworn Microsoft stopped selling NT 4.0 licenses in October. As of July 1st, they will have phased most of it out. However, I think you can still get it from the system builder channel through July 1st 2003. They will also continue to provide security patches (not service pack) to current customers... So, I guess it's all relative...

Not selling it != Not supporting it. Also a lot of MS licenses (and I believe this applies to OS licenses) are valid for previous versions, so you can buy a Win2K license and legally install NT 4.

I still think NT4 is a better server platform because it's thinner and a ton less convoluted than Win2K.

Nothingman, that is what I was thinking.

Since you work for MS... =) ... tell me how in the hell you can release a piece of software (in this case SFU 2.0) with major features (in this case NFS name mapping) that just doesnt work, period. 1.0 works fine, but only supports NT 4 and some of our users have moved to Win2K (for development and QA of our products on it) otherwise we'd just stick with 1.0. The 3.0 CDs should be here in ~2 weeks so we'll see if it works, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

FujiFilm still use NT 4.0 on their Labservers on Fuji Frontier 350/370/390 Digital PhotoLabs...so it still has some life left in it yet..

The vast majority of companies using NT have yet to move to Active Directory. Most of those are still happily installing and using NT4.

I'm sorry if you thought I was being argumentative, I just thought it was being cancelled...

I don't think support 'officially' stops until July of next year, but of coarse they are not pushing it anymore. It kind of sucks for the place I work because we want a copy for a backup server but can't get it ( I don't think) under academic open. Our servers are simple and have no need to migrate to 2000.

Microsoft allows you to purchase a W2K Server license and install NT4 in its place.

If I have a legal, original NT 4.0 Server CD, can I sell it with the purchaser owning the associated license?

Exactly how my company is. For those of you not in IT, moving from standard NT style domains to Active Directory is a big project, especially if you can't just up and take down the network.

I helped migrate our server from NT 4.0... I did the importing into Win2k (I really don't know much of NT 4.0), installing AD, and importing our users and settings... Yes, it is a task!
