Is now the time to shop for hardware upgrades?

Will AMD drop prices on their cpus even more this holiday season? I'm trying to think when is the best time to upgrade. I already WANT to upgrade my pc but I don't want to order the stuff now and then in a week or two see "prices lowered".

Wait for NForce4 if you're on the fence right now.

I think waiting is a good bet for a lot of things right now. NF4 is coming out. AGP 6600gts are still limited in availability and thus more expensive than they should be...and ATI hasn't dropped the price on their 9800s yet even though newer cards are out...those bastards. 😀

well, I'm in the same shoes. I was 2 seonds away from hitting the orde button on zzf until I realized I need nforce4 mobo to utilize NCQ on the harddrive.

In this industry, longer you wait, better stuff you'll be able to get at lower prices. But you know what, by then newer technologies would be out. it's a vicious cycle! I don't know what to do myself. Go with nforce3 ultra or wait for nforce4....

im personaly waiting till about febuary next year

at which point im gonna go for a PCI-E nforce4 system which should of hopefully droped in price a little

well I already own an AGP 6800GT from evga so essentially all I would be doing would be moving from my crappy Intel mobo/p4 2.4ghz to like an AMD. I dunno if I would want pci-e. Is nforce4 a pci-e mobo, cause it wouldnt benefit me at the moment.

Yes it is

PCI-E really offers no advantage over AGP at mo other than upgradeability so dont worry about having an AGP card

reason im waiting for Nforce 4 is it has a lot of other cool features on it that i want

I actually worry that prices are going to go up after Christmas. That, or AMD is going to do something to cripple these Winnies since people are overclockin the crap out of em.

Personally, I'd say it depends on what you currently have that determines your need to upgrade. Right now, I've got a P4 2.4C a GB of DDR400 and an AGP 6800GT. It runs every game I throw at it at 1280x102 with details maxed out. Given this, I cannot justify spending a grand to upgrade the CPU and motherboard again, for a minimal speed boost.

My next upgrade is likely going to be in 05, to some sort of dual core CPU, more memory, and a PCIe videocard. Probably sell almost everything in my current system though. 🙂

The reason I would upgrade is because I just built my brother a new pc (with the help from this forum) and I love how nice and smooth it runs. I mainly hate my computer because of its mobo/RAM. Im still limited by max of 768MB RDRAM and it annoys me so much. If I were to buy a new mobo/ram I rather just go the extra mile and get a new CPU at the same time. I was very impressed by my brothers AMD so I wanted to move to AMD and pass my pc down to a younger family member.

Just wondering what timeframe usually is better to shop for cpus.
