I wouldn't touch any individual stocks, you don't know which companies bet too much of their pension funds on WaMu or REITs, or who needs some short term credit but won't be able to get it.

This is a decent time to buy an S&P 500 index mutual fund or ETF, as long as you can stay calm if the market drops more and can be patient and hold the fund for up to several years for the market to recover.

Unless you think it's the end times, then guns, ammo and canned food are the best investments.

If you're young and can sit on it for years, yeah, now is a great time to buy. Plenty of bargians out there.

What would you consider the "top 10" right now?

Well, condidering GM used to trade at 50+, and it closed on Friday at 9.00, I think they're a steal. Sun Micro fell through the floor recently (makers of Java). they were trading near 20 and closed at 6.75. Symantec is going to be releasing Norton 2009, and it looks like an amazing product. They've been closing very low lately (16.95...they were in the mid 20s)

Also, keep an eye on Sandisk...I think they're going to get taken over by Samsung if they want to or not.

Soy!

Unless you intend to put the effort into learning a lot, you're best just sticking to mutual funds where someone who knows a lot more than you do will manage the investments.

It depends on your investment strategy. A general question such as, is now a good time to buy stock has no definite.

Value investing-wise, it may be a good time to find bargains for companies with solid fundamentals right now or in the near future.

Or trying copying Warren Buffet, haha!

If I had more guts I would have bought Wachovia for $1 with the down payment savings. Would have had enough for a nice house if it was sold for $7.

If you have to ask, I'd have to say the answer for you is no. It's a great time for speculative buys... not for anything long term. Unless you have a high tolerance for risk, you should continue to wait out the current shitstorm.

The big price moves are happening at the end of each Quarter, when everyone posts their resulsts. As the Magic 8 Ball would say, ask again later. (January)

Get in after the election would be a safer choice at the moment because there may be a clearer picture of the market direction.

If you are going long IMHO.
MO is a good choice if you have no moral.
GE is another good choice because they are going the green energy direction, and Warren Buffet is confident enough with the company to pump cash into it.
IR also is a good choice at the moment if you are a green trader.
