Is Novell history?

Nah. Right now, nobody can match the security that Novell offers over NT and Unix. Novell's biggest problem is that it doesn't support ANY sort of SMP, which seriously hampers the NOS under heavy load.

I quit following Novell after Netware 4.x. As far as I'm concerned there's no reason to use it.

I quit following Novell when we migrated to NT four years ago. But I have to tell you there were things about NetWare that really miss.

Mainly the salvage utility.

novell died not because microsoft killed them. It was their own stupidity. Netware 5 was like 2 years late. I remember a year before it came out i had a nearly fully working beta of it. NT 4 just happened to come out before and killed it. Supposedly from what i've heard netware 5 is really good, but its too late. A friend of mine spent $5000 becoming a CNE sophmore year of high school. Never made a dime, haha he wasted so much money

Novells problem is that it was not TCP/IP ready when everything else was. Sure it supported it, but TCP/IP was not a native protocol. NT4 used netbios for naming, but transfers were TCP/IP.

Now Win2k is full TCP/IP, is very secure compared to NT4, and is very simple to use. For most things I will take win2k over linux too. I would rather serve a web site through IIS than Apache. IIS is much faster. Only trouble I have with IIS is setting permissions for individual users.

At my school, ISU, we have been using Novell Netware for at least a decade now. But the network administrative gurus are changing their mind, they are migrating toward NT (Win 2K).

No wonder they cut their staff stranght by 17%, probably not because of over budget but no brains engineers.

Chooie,

Novell does support SMP. It just really sucks. The second processor usually just sits there heating up the case.

I'm sure they will be assimilated into the Microsoft collective eventually; Microsoft tends to do that a lot.

Maybe Netware 5 wasn't a big hit, but NDS certainly took off & beats its MS competition by a country mile.
