Norway is the best country in the world to live in according to HDI (human development index). So I read somewhere that Norway is socialist? Is it true?

I would assume so, as all the Nordic countries seem to be.

I would also assume this is leading into a discussion of "why can't the US do the same thing?". I'll wait for the main question to be asked before answering.

It's parliamentary and democratic, but because they take care of their people, the right wing can't stand that a system like that works, and therefore insult it by calling it socialist, which has negative connotations to them; wouldn't want to assist people! :colbert:

It is a mixed economy. Highly regulated and taxed. But has a private economy.

Social democratic like the rest of the Nordics. I'd never call any Nordic country socialist though, that just shows ignorance.

Socialism isn't a yes/no, it is a continuum. All developed countries are socialist to a certain extent, the only question is how much.

Socialism:

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods

2a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property
b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state

3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

I think much of Norway's success lies in it's enormous oil reserves. It is making an absolute fortune on oil.

That, also the relatively tiny, centralized, homogenous population with very few immigrants from third world countries (although that is increasing recently).

That's actually a detriment. Low population growth plus low immigration rate equal small workforce.

Well yes, people before corporation there. Do you have any idea what "socialist" means beyond the usual "Knee Jerk" definition?

Low population growth plus lots of people with no education isn't better than a small workforce.

I know socialist is an evil word and all, but every developed country is socialist. It is just a matter of how much. Norway probably just spends its money better than some other ones (ie: we spend similar amounts, we just don't get the returns)

Where is Alaska on HDI scale?
Looked it up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_American_Human_Development_Index
21 Decrease (4) Alaska 5.06

Looks like the scale is different than the one used for countries, but it's #21 behind California #12, which has huge heterogeneous population with a lot of immigrants from third world countries and not much oil per capita.

In many ways it is socialist and it's sickening how so many leftists defend Norway and want the US to be like Norway.

Government involvement is OK only when it is in support and execution of conservative goals:
- corporate welfare
- stopping homosexuals from getting married
- stopping women from getting abortions

When the government tries anything against, or not for, a conservative cause,... then it's a problem and the government must not be scaled back and down,.. but, rather readjusted to be in favor of conservatives.

So it's considered the best place in the world to live by a reputable source, but it's sickening to use them as an example to influence public policy in any way, simply because of your silly knee jerk reaction to the broad term "socialist". I'm just going to go ahead and assume that you have already determined with no evidence to back it up that whomever compiles the human development index is a liberal rag. How could their lives possibly be better when we have a higher GDP, amiright??

Are you saying it's better than the US? Typical moronic leftist anti-American. The government is stealing from hard working people and giving it to others, of course those people will be happy.

I don't think he was being serious.

Except for rare occasions when the script throws an error the responses are pretty consistent...

something leftists something
something persecuted Christians something
something war on Christmas something
something Muslims something
STFU - a very common one because he such a believer in the constitution he constantly yells at everyone else to STFU....

One summer I'm driving to Northern Norway to the coast of the Arctic Sea to watch the midnight sun shine on the Arctic. I live slightly south of the Arctic Circle and I've never seen the 'true' midnight sun. Altho there's no darkness here in June, time between sunset and sunrise is less than 3 hours, it's still not true midnigt sun. Whenever I go north of the Arctic Circle it's bloody polar night season.

Norway is not a socialist state. Norway is an awesome state. A good neighbour to have.
