Is no one able to distinguish "lose" and "loose"?

I'm watching Cellular right now with the subtitles on and twice I've seen them misuse "loose" when it was supposed to be lose. I can understand a low budget chinese movie or something misusing it in the translation but this is supposed to be an actual professional thing? Yeesh.

I was watching Constantine and a caption said "Is it the mother lode?"
I could be wrong, but shouldn't that be "Mother load"?

One of my pet peeves.

For those who still don't know:

Lose - When you don't win or similar.

Loose - When something is not tight.

Lode (n): a clearly defined vein of rich ore. The principal vein in a region was called the "mother lode."

Motherlode is correct.

You lose if you have loose grammar.

One of my college roommates was not very bright. I walked in the room one day and she had put a big sign over the fridge to remind her of her diet - "Loose Weight". I didn't even comment on it, there were too many choices.

I can understand being dumb enough to misuse they're, there, and their.. but if you seriously don't know when to use lose instead of loose or visa versa, then just /end yourself.

I think that they're both one and the same level of dumbass intelligence. There should be no excuse in either case.
