Is Nintendo DS worth it?

It's been years since I bought a video game or a console. Quite frankly I lost interest. Chuck it up to growing up and having less free time to sit on a sofa. I want to get back in the game. I want to feel like a 10 year old gamer again. Help me lift this veil of responsibilities covering my eyes. Let me find once again what I have lost so long ago.

I cruised the isles of CC the other day and spotted the Nintendo DS. It got me excited. It's one sweet hardware. Now I'm willing to spend my lunch money on it if I'm convinced it is worth my time and money. I want to know if DS games are more than just button clicking with no depth? Are they pretty much mindless games that can be completed in a single session?

I'm looking for games that have deep and involving story lines. I want games that will suck me in passed my bed time. You know what I'm talking about?

I love console games as much as the next guy, but given your post perhaps you should wander over to the PC Gaming forum? For me, console have always been good for "pick up and play" games, while the PC is better at more in-depth, time-consuming gaming.

Edit: If you're dead set on returning to the console arena, then I'd recommend a slimline PS2. There are an unbelievable number of cheap, good PS2 games available nowadays. You will save plenty of "lunch money" that way, too.

Deep storylines...you an FF fan? If so, you can play FF6 GBA (second best game ever, imo), FF3, and FFIV. FFXII: Revenant Wings is also coming out.

Are those FF games anything like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance? That game was monotonous and got boring quickly.

No. I'm into deep games as well, and I stopped playing my DS a year ago (PSP has my attention). It's just my personal preference...I'm not saying the DS is bad, and I know it has great games. I just lost interest quickly.

If you really want the games blamb425 mentioned (great games, by the way), though, you'll have to go the GBA/DS route.

Also FF I and II.

I highly recommend the Advance Wars series - there are three games, two for GBA and 1 for DS. Also Fire Emblem - two games for GBA. I haven't played them (other than the first few battles in one of them), but if they're as good as the Gamecube Fire Emblem title, then they're very, very good games.

There are quite a few good games out for the DS. For portable gaming it's a no brainer - although the PSP is rather impressive if you have it up and running with the custom firmwares - you can play SNES and PSOne games. Those two systems I feel still encompass some of the best RPG/adventure games made.

I think your post is a little confusing. You want a console or a handheld?

IMO, if you want deep & involving story lines you should go with a PS2, PC or 360 respectively. The DS is awesome, but for 2d, old school & a few 3d/new games. Plus the screen is tiny, too me I can't enjoy staring that thing for too long, it just gets old quickly. I would recommend a PS2, cheap & has the largest library of high quality games.

i did not see anyone answer this question, so i will.

NO, I am a die hard FF fan from the first one on NES 😛 and i have to agree with your all FF Tactics game suck, they are very boring to me too. But then again if you never played a real FF game you might not like it either. If you like more control over your characters the FFXII for the PS2 is a damn good game full of control action. But personally i like the normal one also. FF6, FF7, and FF12 are my fav next to chrono trigger that is 🙂

Oh, if you didn't like Final Fantasy Tactics, you might not like Fire Emblem... or Advance Wars for that matter.

The reason I didn't like FF Tactics was because it seemed like all I did was move around the map to engage in battles one after the other. Now I only played it for a few days so I may not have given it enough time to spew out a story. I did get hooked in the beginning when the kids were playing in the playground throwing snowballs. But after that it was all about roaming the map.

I've had 2 ds's, the original and now a DS lite. I used to love portable gaming before I had a PC, but now the games seem pretty crappy, especially when your paying $40 a pop for new titles.

There are a few good games, but not enough to justify buying a DS imo.

I'd say at this point a PC gamer would find more of interest in the PSP, especially with the Slim version coming out soon.

The one that begins with kids throwing snowballs is FFTA (Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced), I think. This may seem like a trivial correction but FFT and FFTA are completely different games. I believe Square plans to continue both series.

I bought one last month, and I've played it a ton more than I've played my Wii or xbox(regular)

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney is fun!

I own both a PSP and a DS. I am 41 years old. I don't know where my PSP is. Its in my house "somewhere". I love my DS. PLay it everyday. PSP never caught my attention nor did it have any deep games. All flash and no substance. And the controls and HORRENDOUS load time on the PSP are really the killer. DS>PSP anyday. My 2 cents.

yeah also the DS is still selling pretty good.

geat an R4 for hombrew (though homebrew sucks so far. i am dispointed in whats out)
