Is name change in registry universal?

My girlfriend's sister is giving her XP desktop to her daughter because she is going to a laptop. I'm going to change the registered user name in the registry.

What I want to know is whether the installed applications that have the mothers name will still work and does the name change?

I wouldn't bet on it, I believe most applications keep the registration data in their own seperate place. It would be best to reload the thing, that'll ensure that she doesn't leave anything on the machine she doesn't want to anyway.

Any new installations would pick it up from the registry, but applications that have been registered to a name with a serial number will not display the change. You either have to use the old name and serial number or receive a new serial number (if SN is dependent upon name/organization).

Go to the CD. I believe it's tools, and there is a cab file with tools including sysprep. Run sysprep on the box and reboot.

As an aside I am not sure how XP activation would be affected. Reloading would probably run into the same problem however
