Is my Xbox dying?

Up until recently I've had zero problems with it... never a dirty disc error, never froze. But the other day I tried to play NHL Hitz Pro and kept getting a dirty disc error. It wouldn't even load the main menu. Now NHL 2k5 is freezing after about 2 hours of playing it. I'm thinking it COULD be over heating, so I was going to open it up and set a fan blowing towards it to see if that changes anything. If I've opened it, and that doesn't help, can I still send it in to Microsoft to get it fixed? I know the warranty is only 90 days, but would they refuse to work on it (for a fee) at all if I've opened it?

Also would Microsoft send me a new DVD drive to replace myself?

Could be that your DVD drive is going. Or the lens could be dirty. I've seen quite a few drives for sale separately in the FS/FT forum (mostly Thomson, but a few Samsung as well) lately if you don't want to go through the hassle of waiting for MS.

Try playing another game, maybe that one is scratched up to much or somthing. Have you tried cleaning it?

My discs are in perfect condition and almost all of them will freeze when I get to graphic intensive parts.

Weird... those problems showed up at my brother's house. Now I'm back home and it works just fine. I wonder if it could be that the power at his house isn't as clean as it is at mine, and it was enough to upset the laser in the DVD ROM.

My X-Box is slow, struggles to read discs, overall a very busted XBox. I'd throw in a a new DVDROM but I can't justify spending ANY money on that POS.

Mod it and run the games off the HD. Thats what I did with my thompson drive, its been modded for a year and a half, I get quicker load times and don't put any stress on the drive.

I still want to use Xbox Live though... at least until my subscription runs out.

d.r.e = disc read error

Yes Samsung drives are THE best.
I also agree that modding is the best idea for ceappy xbox. And load times and such are greatly improved when going off the hd.
