Is my WD Raptor DOA??

I just got my WD Raptor from Newegg and i'm trying to install it but i'm running in to some problems. I slipstreamed SP2 and my Silicon Image Raid drivers on my installation cd becasue I no longer have a floppy to install from. XP setup installs the drivers fine, then procedes to format and copy the files on to the HD. However, after it is done installing the files, the BSOD comes up when windows is trying to load for the first time. It says windoes has detected an error and stopped to prevent damage to your computer . . try removing any recently installed drive controllers or hard drive. I know the slipstreamed disc works because i was able to install and load windows on my ide hd. is my raptor DOA or am i missing something during the installation process? Like I said, the drivers loads and windows text setup detects the Raptor. is only when its trying to load windows for the first time after it is done copying the files where the bsod pops up.

Are the other hard drives installed while your trying to install windows on the raptor? It's best to disconnect other hard drives while doing the windows install. If you have any other pci cards, I would remove some of them as well, and install one thing at a time after getting windows running. Have you tried going in to safe mode? Are you doing any overclocking?

no oc, i unplugged the other drives, the only pci device is my audigy 2 zs gamer. windows isn't fully installed, it just copied all the files, normally, the computer restarts and the graphic installtion screens pops up.

I've experienced a similar situation as you are talking about. There has been a few instances over the past few months that I did a full install of Win XP and when it was ready to boot to the desktop for the first time, it would BSOD. I just kept trying to reinstall Win XP (took me about three times) before it took. Sometimes I find Win XP install is just finicky. Another thing is make sure that the Win XP install CD is clean. I had a fingerprint on the CD on one install and it would not finish.

BTW, I now have a image of just Win XP installed on a back up hard drive just in case I need to reinstall again and not go through the full frustrating event again. Good luck.

Run the diagnostic utility from the WD site. But I don't think it's the Raptor. Files are obviously being copied as Windows is able to give you an error message.

I'd be looking at BIOS settings in regards to booting off a SATA drive.

Your slipstreamed CD may have been able to do an install on an IDE drive, but that does not prove out it's functionality in this regard. Did you happen to look in Device Manager on the IDE install and verify that the SI device was installed properly?

Me, I'd throw a floppy drive in temporary and do it the old fashioned way.

I'll try the diagnostic utility, I've already enabled the sata contoller on my mobo bios. I'm gonna have to go out and buy a floppy since i never replaced my old one when it died. Never thought i'd ever need it again. I'll see what comes up after diagnostics.

o yea, i ran chkdsk on the raptor in windows from my ide hd installation, there were no errors reported, which is even more baffling to me.

I did the same thing as mauiblue. It took me two or three times before it finally took. I also went out and bought norton ghost and an external hdd to aviod the frustration a second time.
