Is my WD fuxt?

I think it is, but maybe this is a common occurance or something, I've never had a drive go bad on me and this sucks cause it's a system build for a friend.

I was copying gigs of stuff over my lan to his win2k setup, then it started to get REALLY REALLY slow.
The machine was still running, but like, incredibly sow, no cursor, it would appear intermitently every now and again, reflecting any positional changes but was useless.
I turned off the machine.
Booted it up, took like 20 minutes to boot!!!
Rebooted, no hard drive deteced :|
Rebooted, detected the drive but was painfully, impossibly slow again.
Took a known good maxtor (fvck I love maxtor) and threw it in there and there were no problems.
This is a WD 400BB drive, do they suck?

I had a 40 gig western digital die like that.. took forever for it to work..

RMA it, because it wont work anymore...

on a happier note, the one I recieved back wasn't refurbished and works better than ever...

I agree....Maxtor do own 🙂...I have a 3gig Maxtor HDD from 6 years ago and it still runs like its new =)

western digitals own, but that's just my opinion... I did have a 40 gig maxtor that was nice and worked for like 3 years so far but I haven't used enough of them to base an opinion about them... I've had many western digitals...

"This is a WD 400BB drive, do they suck?"

I had the SAME exact drive... crapped out on me too. Did the exact same thing... so I RMAed it to Western Digital and got a brand new one.

I have that exact drive, and I love it!. It beat the crap out of my old 9.6 gig 5400 rpm WD HD which sounded like a tin can with marbles bouncing around in it. I plan on buying another WD400BB and putting it in a RAID-0

I have two of those exact drives plus a 60GB and a 100GB WD (I run WD drives exclusively) and I've never had a problem. Once I get the cash I intend to buy a RAID controller so I can put the two 40s in RAID 1.

Thanks all, I've never RMA'd a drive before, anything I should know beforehand?
I picked this drive up off of FS/FT BTW .. but I checked the serial and it's good till' 2005.
The drive was new when I got it. Installed windows on it, copied some stuff over. Maybe booted it like 8 times and now it's all fuxt and stuff. Not the best first impression. Also, I noticed that this drive is a lot lighter than other drives I've used. It feels like it's made out of plastic, unlike the maxtors and seagates I've had experience with that feel heavier/tougher.

Go to the WD website and download the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics Tools.
Read the instructions, run the programs and see what you can do. Sometime you just have to 'Write Zeros' to save a disc,
then start over from there. The Diagnostics program will tell you if the disc is good or bad.
